RyanFishing Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 I've tried carving fishing lures before and painting them with spray paint and it's fun but the final products aren't great. I actually want to get into it for real. I'm doing a school project and by the end of the year I have to have a final product which will be a fishing lure. I'm wondering what I need to start out. I'm assuming a air brush, but what kind? That's reasonably priced? And what epoxy do you use to seal the bait? Any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!! Quote
Big C Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Hobby Lobby has the best deals on airbrushes, because they have 40% off coupons (check out their website) to get both a brush and compressor 40% off you'll have to go on different days (one per person per day). I got an Iwata Neo and Iwata Ninja compressor, which is a great starter set-up, for a great price. I highly suggest getting a gravity fed brush they are easier to use, clean, and they waste less paint. For epoxy never use 5 min. you'll never have enough time get 30 min. I get that from Hobby Lobby too, I think their house brand is around $10. Quote
Jaw1 Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Go to tackle underground and look through the hardbait forum. It's got all the info you'll need and then some. That being said here's a little start up info. Like bigc said use the %40 coupon at hobby lobby. I use an iwata eclipse gravity fed airbrush ( tried the neo through it in the trash didn't work for me) along with a few others but this brush is great for lure painting. You can pick up balsa and basswood there as well until you decide if its a hobby you want to continue. There are better deals to be found on wood. I use createx paints which you can also get at hobby lobby along with others you would have to order. Bob Smith 30 min epoxy or devcon 2ton work well and if you use balsa you can seal it with superglue. These are just startup items to get you going but I recommend visiting the other site for more detail Quote
RyanFishing Posted October 21, 2015 Author Posted October 21, 2015 Thanks BigC and Jaw1!! I'll definitely check out the iwata airbrushes! Thanks for the advice! Quote
So. Cal. Lunker Hunter Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 Hi I used to make my own swimbaits First the best airbrush for a beginner is the passache h modal Next a good material to start with a a dowel rod in 1" or 1.25 diameter I used a belt sander to ruff out the basic shape Then final sand with a sanding block I post some picks of the final product later today Quote
RyanFishing Posted October 22, 2015 Author Posted October 22, 2015 Thanks everyone! And what type of paint do you use? Quote
Jaw1 Posted October 22, 2015 Posted October 22, 2015 Createx wicked and regular transparent createx colors, and com.art. either one will get you started both are waterbased remember to pick up some of their reducer also. Quote
Big C Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 Createx is good, but I'm trying to find a better brand. Their colors seem a tad vannilla, for me. I'm looking for something that pops a little more, so if you find any good brands post about it. Quote
Jaw1 Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Try the taxidermy sites maybe they have something you would be interested in. I use some from time to time. Chicago and bear air web names I believe Quote
whackett Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Try Golden paints their all artist paints made for the airbrush Quote
Garcia Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 I use a Iwata HP-CS airbrush. You rely need a duel action air brush not single action. If you use Createx paints you either need to thin it for it to go through a 3 mm needle or you need to get a 5 mm air brush. Wicked paints are thinner but, cost more. You can also get illustrator colors, they are thinner for 3 mm air brushes. My Iwata HP-cs has a 5 mm needle so I can spray Createx right out of the bottle. If I need reducer to thin the paint I use 4012 reducer. I get my paints @ TCP Global. For epoxy I use Devcon 2 ton epoxy. A good starter air brush is the Neo airbrush, it is duel action and it's about $50. Good luck painting and have fun. Quote
