I went out this weekend without looking at the weather first (never a good idea.) The lows went from 50 on Thursday to 35 on Friday. I had a ton of trouble figuring out the fish being that this was a totally new lake to me, and the cold front made it even smaller. I was fishing lake Murphysboro in south Illinois. 13 miles south of lake Kinkaid. I hope I don't regret saying the name but it is a 140 acre lake with a 10hp limit which receives almost no pressure. I saw lots of lay downs and the lake appeared heavily stained but it wasn't quite muddy. I saw about a 14" bass chasing a 6" shad so I know they are eating shad. I tried spinnerbaits, swimjigs, jigs, crankbaits (rattletraps and squarebills), jerkbaits, poppers, spooks, buzzbaits, ect. Only caught 4 on Saturday after fishing almost all day. 3 fish ate a super spook jr. and I got one dink to eat a ike's mini flip jig all on a rip rap bank.  I couldn't even fish Sunday due to all the wind. Could someone please give me some tips on their favorite baits for cold front conditions in stained shallow water and a lot of laydowns.

with 3 on top no less... That sounds like a good day for those conditions. Typically after a cold front like that the fish pretty much shut down. The small bucks may still be cruising and chasing bait, but the larger fish will be hunkered down somewhere with more stable temps. In the south, that is heavy matted vegetation, up north after the weed-lines have died off  it's Deep structure with rocks and wood if available.

Sounds like I'm probably a couple hours directly west of you. I fished a new lake these evening. 200 acres. I bank fished a point with the wind and waves coming directly towards me. I threw a lot of lures. I did quite well on squarebills and rattletraps. I probably caught 8. None of them were monsters, but they weren't babies either. So all in all a good day.

The reason I mentioned the wind blowing directly towards me is because I have had some of my best fall and spring days when the wind and waves are coming directly in towards the bank I'm fishing from. It makes casting more difficult, of course, but it has worked out so far.

You  just have to keep chucking. Even after an autumn   cold front I have caught a lot of bass on med diving crankbaits such as a Bomber Model A .

I have been catching them just like I would fish for them in the summer, in shallow cover!  Water temp read 53 degrees last sunday.  The night before the outside temp was 28 late night.  Using summer baits like tx rigged worms, craws, and jigs!  Have been getting some pretty decent fish too, 4,5 and a couple 6 pounders!  Don't know how much longer this will keep up, but they are still hitting hard, and I'll keep on casting until hell freezes over with 3 feet of ice!  I don't really like throwing spinnerbaits or crankbaits if I don't have to.  I seem to catch them on those, don't get me wrong.  I just feel like I get some better fish with the before methods.  I don't get why so many thing you read tell you to put away the summer baits and get out the moving baits, because if I did that, I wouldn't be catching half the fish I am if I followed those rules.

Or drop shot those fish next time. It is my go to for cold fronts and late fall and early winter fishing.

Put down the "Fun to fish" moving baits and fish a JIG.

I agree that I seem to get more bites casting into the wind.
