i haven't used it but i doubt it would hold up well.

take a factory bait and just dip it in the polyurethane and get a few coats on there. then fish with it and see how it holds up.

devcon, etex, flex coat, DN, target coatings can all be used without a spray gun. actually most clear coats are used without a spray gun.

As a painting contractor, not bait painter, I have lots of experience with the poly.  I think it is too soft to use on a bait.  We don't use it on steps due to dents caused by shoes.  There are some other products you may find in a paint store that may be better suited.  Maybe XIM Clear 400?

I am trying polycrylic on a few, its win/win if it doesnt work I can still use it to finish the trim on the soon to be babies room lol!

I've used polycrylic for topcoat and it will not hold up for long; it will absorb water and turn cloudy and soft.
