I know they have been tons of questions asked about fluorocarbon lines. I did a quick search for my question but couldn't find the answer. For example sniper 18lb is the size of seaguar 15lb, both different lb ratings but do they actually have the same breaking strength? Cause I know some lines have a smaller lb rating but have same diameter as larger lb ratings but have the same breaking sttength for example yo-zuri.

they both break at around 18. Japan generally rating goes by true breaking point while US does whatever they want.

The breaking strength of anything is based on the square inch area of the material known as pounds per square inch or psi. Polymer fishing line the is extruded as a diameter the psi is based on that diameter area (pi x radius squared).

So it breaking strength comes to what the smallest line diameter is within the length of line being tested.

If the varies in diameter as it is being extruded and depending on the manufacturing process their will be a variance, some very slight some vary more depending on quality control.

If you tested every brand of fluorocarbon fishing line based on diameter only, the breaking strength would be within 10% unless there was a flaw or wide diameter variance.

The problem with line manufacturers is they have learned to market thier product based on pound test without any standards requiring they list the diameter and the angler community simply looks at the labeled pound test to purchase line.

Another factor to consider is knot strength, what is the breaking strength with the manufacturers recommended knot and how fast was the pulling force applied? Anglers and fish tend to pull very fast, the pull test should be at a average fast impact rate....again no standards. The breaking strength should be wet, not dry strength, it's fishing line!

Always look at the lines diameter, you may need to do some research to find it.
