Super User ChrisD46 Posted October 17, 2015 Super User Posted October 17, 2015 For those who are experienced at using a Shakeyhead Worm application - what dictates worm length as we move through Fall with lowering water temps ? Robo Worm (as an example) comes in 4.5" & 6" straight tail versions : Do you drop down to the smaller 4.5" straight tail Robo Worm in falling water temps , stay with the larger 6" straight tail worm , or feel it doesn't make a difference ? ... Mainly interested in what governs your choice between shakyhead worm lengths , season and water temps ? Perhaps water clarity or some other factor helps you decide between a 4.5" or 6" worm length for Shakyhead ?...Thanks in advance ! Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted October 17, 2015 Super User Posted October 17, 2015 I let the mood of the fish determine that for me, water temp plays only a small part. My favorite worm for shaky heads is 4.5" and I use it in both warm and cold water but if the fish are hitting hard and aggressive or if I'm getting a lot of smaller fish I'll upsize to a 6" worm. If I'm throwing a 6" worm and bites are slow or I'm missing them because they grab it by the tail, then I'll drop back to the 4.5", but the way the fish react is what makes me change, not so much the water temp but I will start with the 4.5" worm when we get into the mid 50s with the water temp. 2 Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted October 17, 2015 Super User Posted October 17, 2015 If "m going to shaky head fish, a Zoom trick worm is most likely where I'm going to start. I generally use the screw in jig heads, so I'll cut a quarter inch or so off the front of the worm so that it fits flush against the jig head. If I'm getting bit and the area where you skin hook gets messed up, I might trim back the worm several times before going to a new worm. More and more so far this year, the BPS Mag fin-eke worm has out produced the trick worm in terms of size, probably not numbers. That worm is 6 inches long or so and thicker than a senko. Use a jig head with a 4/0 hook. Quote
