WPCfishing Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 I lost a 10 pounder in mid air today... I was flipping when he hit. I set him and it was on. I knew he was big.. Very big. When I got him up on top by the boat instead of reaching for him or grabbing the net which was right at my finger tips I lifted him up. He was so heavy the hook just tore out of his flesh and I watched him fall into the water. I've never had a problem like this.. I've never caught a 10+ pounder. Awful feeling.. I'll never forget it. 1 Quote
Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted October 13, 2015 Super User Posted October 13, 2015 you have to remember that big fish have thicker jaw structure than 2-5 lb. bass , if you get a good hook penatration through cartilidge , you can boat flip them but i usually lip them , i guess you got a lesson learned . sorry to hear you lost a good fish 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 13, 2015 Global Moderator Posted October 13, 2015 Once they get much over 4 pounds they either get lipped or netted. I've seen way too many big fish lost by lifting them with the line. 4 Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted October 13, 2015 Super User Posted October 13, 2015 I only boat flip dinks, any bigger and I'll either lip them, or get them in the net just to prevent this. 1 Quote
Super User Montanaro Posted October 13, 2015 Super User Posted October 13, 2015 Boat flipping double digit bass? Hahahahahahahaha 3 Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted October 13, 2015 Super User Posted October 13, 2015 a 10+ pounder flipped? i might have slapped you if i were there with you.... a fish of that size could have put you in the record books in many New England states.... Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted October 13, 2015 Super User Posted October 13, 2015 Bass usually come in three sizes ~ There's the Small ones. Then there's the Medium ones. And then there's The One That Got Away. A-Jay 14 Quote

Believe me, I've been beating myself up... I was so worried about loosing him I took the short cut. Lesson learned. Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted October 14, 2015 Super User Posted October 14, 2015 Its all in the momentum, I boat flip DD bass all the time... I can kayak flip them too if I'm careful 1 Quote
Super User senile1 Posted October 14, 2015 Super User Posted October 14, 2015 I know how it feels. The Missouri largemouth record is 13 lbs 14 oz and I lost one a couple of weeks ago that had to be pushing 15. I was fishing a pink rattletrap and when I pulled her to the surface and tried to lip her. I put my whole hand in her mouth. Alas, she broke free and disappeared into the depths, almost pulling me out of the boat. I nicknamed her Dottie and will be posting a video of the pond/lake she inhabits in the not-to-distant future. 4 Quote
WPCfishing Posted October 14, 2015 Author Posted October 14, 2015 I re-live it and re-live it and re-live it. Ouch! I know where he live's................................ I'm going after him Saturday. 1 Quote
Starchalopakis Posted October 14, 2015 Posted October 14, 2015 One of the lessons I had to learn early when I started bass fishing, lost quite a few nice ones in a short period and that cured me of flippin big fish Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted October 15, 2015 Super User Posted October 15, 2015 I have a simple rule. If I have to play the bass while I'm reeling it in, I lip it. 4 Quote
Super User everythingthatswims Posted October 16, 2015 Super User Posted October 16, 2015 Big fish do a really good job of shaking a jig out of their head when they are "hot". Sometimes it's better to try and swing them instead of giving them another chance to throw it. I don't know about doing that with a 10lb fish but I do know that I would probably do something way worse if I hooked one that size! Gotta stay after her now! Quote
Super User HoosierHawgs Posted October 16, 2015 Super User Posted October 16, 2015 I just about always lip fish. You can boat flip all types of fish, just make sure to never grab the line. You need the give in the rod so it doesn't tear out of their flesh. Quote
Smokinal Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 I boat flip DD bass all the time... Ya, 01's, 02's and 03's. Never a DD that starts with a 1 though. 5 Quote

WPCfishing Posted October 18, 2015 Author Posted October 18, 2015 I flip fives with ease.. This bass was just to heavy and strong. Plus I only fought with it for 10 feet or so. It wasn't tired at all.. I didn't make it out there today. Hopefully tomorrow.. Quote

I also fish out of a canoe and some swings are sketchier than others especially when they are in the 5+ range. Last night after I swung in a 5 my line snapped with the hudd still embedded in the top of the fish's face, with the fish in the boat at least. I know I would have been upset if that had happened mid-air losing a fish that is half the size that you speak of. Keep at her, She has to eat again sometime... Quote
