aweiss90 Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 Question for any of you guys that have or currently fished Mark Twain Lake. Is it always extremely windy? I've been down there the past three consecutive weekends and there has been 20+ MPH winds every time, making it a pain in the ass to fish out of. I mainly use soft plastic worms as im new to the lake and its the only thing ive had any luck with, but the wind was strong enough to, even when i switched to heavier worm weight, the wind would still produce enough force to move my entire line when it was underwater, which caused me to get held up an unusual amount. Just wondering if this is a normal occurance or this time of year possibly? Thanks in advance Quote
Super User scaleface Posted October 12, 2015 Super User Posted October 12, 2015 Nope , just bad luck on your part . Its no windier than an other lake around . Unless its extremely windy like today you should be able to find some sheltered water and all the major arms have bass , Quote
aweiss90 Posted October 12, 2015 Author Posted October 12, 2015 Appreciate the feedback, would you mind giving me some insight as to what's working for you this time of year as far and tackle/colors on MT? The past few weeks I've been trying to eliminate lures and colors so I can narrow down my range and a little advice would go a long way Quote
Super User scaleface Posted October 13, 2015 Super User Posted October 13, 2015 I have been without a boat for five years , until this year and havent made it there this fall so this is all old info but should still be relevant .I use to fish it weekly for fun and tournaments .The lake fishes shallow Rarely have I caught fish 20 foot but have caught lots of limits close to 15 foot . All the arms have fish and I usually go to whatever floats my boat that day . Sandy Creek is small but has a lot of structure so I will use it for an example . Pigeon Roost creek is right across the lake Shell branch is close by and also the Robert Allen boat ramp area holds fish .. Heres is Sandy creek in a nutshell . At the mouth of sandy creek is a short steep rocky point , its a community hole but one may be able to pick up a fish or two there . The steep bluffs, I have had very little luck on them and I recommend not fishing them .On up is a large flat with a cove on both sides , directly across from the Indian Creek marina .Its confusing but Indian creek marina is not in Indian creek . I have caught many limits on that flat and adjoining coves .I use a wide selection of lures square bills , t rigs , spinnerbaits ... Use your depth finder in that area as there is a spot or two that can hold some off shore fish . Inside the no wake zone of the marina is good at times. . On up the creek is a boat ramp and there is a good little point close by . Once again its a community hole but a fish or two can usually be pulled from it . Then there is about a half mile to a mile of standing timber and it has to be fished many ways to find a pattern. There are flat banks , steep banks and in between banks . One just has to fish them all . I like to fish the standing timber on the flat banks . Coming from St Louis you could launch at the Robert Allen ramp that would put you on the middle lake and theres a lot of good fishing mid lake . I hope this helps a little . Quote
Super User scaleface Posted October 13, 2015 Super User Posted October 13, 2015 Its hard to recommend lures because they pretty much all work . Whatever your favorites are, they are just as good as mine . But , if you can acquire an old Dalton Special you will be throwing a top water that no one else throws and I have had a lot of success on them at MT . Fall time I have caught more fish on T rig Lizards than any thing but I think all soft plastics will work just as well . All cranks work well. Bomber and Normans are some I throw that are still being produced . Shad Raps work good as well as Rattle Traps . Buzzbaits , Pop R's . Most of my favorites are old because I'm old . Quote
aweiss90 Posted October 13, 2015 Author Posted October 13, 2015 I can't express you to my gratitude for this post! Will use this information wisely. Surprislnglly, even though I'm only 24 our fishing lures are probably somewhat similar as I inherited my grandpas bass fishing collection and haven't bought many of me own as He had 9+ tackle boxes stuffed with bass and crappie lures. Anyway, thank you so much for the information. Although I've only been fishing for a few years we store our boat at MT and I just recently started to fish it. It's a pretty big challenge I must say, especially if you don't know the lake. I got skunked two weekends in a row and only caught two bass, both under #2, the last time I went. We normally launch at ray berens and The first two weekends we We're back in lick creek and there was schools of baitfish so thick I could walk on them. Last weekend we went back into pigeon roost creek and had a little better luck. Anyway, thanks for the advice it's greatly appreciated. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted October 13, 2015 Super User Posted October 13, 2015 You're welcome . Being you already been in Pigeon Roost you may have seen where the old highway enters . They now use it as a boat ramp. The timber lining that old road is a good spot and extends way out in the lake . Its pretty easy to follow and fish . Quote
AndyNegus94 Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 I fish Twain quite a bit and have my best luck on main lake points with a channel swing, one side being shollow and it drops off real fast on the other, rip rap and ledges if you have sonar and can find them. I fish a lot of square bills in either chartreuse with black back or gizzard shad around lay downs and in coves. and strike King 6xd in gizzard shad around the ledges and points. I also fish a t rig 10" worms and brush hogs in watermelon, green pumpkin andJune bug around the same places I fish the 6xd. Lastly I'll throw a 1/2oz chartreuse/white spinnerbait in the same places I fish the square bill. Download the fishidy app on your cell phone and it can help you find the ledges and channel swings and stuff. Also I most fish the south fork area of the lake and use the route u boat ramp. 1 Quote

South Fork is an interesting place to fish . Quote
AndyNegus94 Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 All my club tournaments are out of route u ramp so I concentrate on that area of the lake when I go up there. I've caught quite a few decent fish on that part of lake and big bass is always over 5 pounds. 1 Quote
daiwaguy Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 Twain is full of ditches and creek channels around the standing timber too, I have lots of limits on black and gold flek brush hogs t rigged with a half ounce tungsten pegged in thesearch subtle bottoman changes. Better late than never. 1 Quote
