Green Trout Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 What are some of the advantages of Copolymer over Monofilament? Out of these 2 lines, which one would you use for Jigs and T rigs? Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted October 7, 2015 Super User Posted October 7, 2015 Yo-Zuri Hybrid works for everything. Â If you want to get more technique specific, use monofilament for treble hooks. Â Â Â 1 Quote
Super User bigbill Posted October 7, 2015 Super User Posted October 7, 2015 Advantages less stretch, less lost fish copolymer. All I use is Excalibur silver thread copolymer line. 1 Quote
WPCfishing Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 I like P-Line CX. It's a hybrid line with little stretch it's tough and casts great. Â I will not use a mono line for anything anymore. Quote
Big C Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Co-Poly.  Less stretch = better hook penetration, which is better for single hook baits. Ande Backwoods Co-Poly (my favorite) is super cheap, with decent quality. Quote
Super User MIbassyaker Posted October 8, 2015 Super User Posted October 8, 2015 I usually use mono and braid, but I picked up a 300 yard spool of Vicious Co-Polymer super-cheap a couple months ago ....even the cheap stuff has noticeably better abrasion resistance, less memory, and less stretch than a standard mono like Trilene. I haven't decided if I'll move over from mono to a co-polymer completely, but I'm definitely impressed enough to sample a few more brands and use it more regularly. 1 Quote

Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted October 8, 2015 Super User Posted October 8, 2015 i think that co-polymer line is the progression of mono line being that it's better at abrasion resistance , memory , and stretch . i used to use Izorline XXX co-polymer line till i ran into a bad spool of 25 lb. line and their customer service turned out to be a joke !! needless to say i have moved on from that brand & am using Gamma co-poly that is ridiculously strong and has low memory even in the higher pound test lines , definitely going to be all i use on my swimbait setup Quote
Super User bigbill Posted October 8, 2015 Super User Posted October 8, 2015 I have tried different brands of copolymer lines. The difference I notice is some lines are a tad stiffer over Excalibur silver thread that makes my knot harder to tie. Yozuri hybrid, was a good copolymer line too. Quote
JustinU1X Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Yo-Zuri Hybrid works for everything. Â If you want to get more technique specific, use monofilament for treble hooks. Super User Choporoz Posted October 8, 2015 Super User Posted October 8, 2015 Another big Yo-Zuri fan here. Only line I use other than braid. The ONLY thing that is slightly negative, or you need to watch out for, is that when doubled over and 'creased', it can become brittle.  Pays to be careful with backlashes and knotting. Rarely a problem, but something to be aware of. Other than that, it is incredibly strong. I use 8# and 15# for mainline and as leader material.  Extremely strong and abrasion resistant. Memory properties far better than any flouro or mono I've tried, so its great on spinning reels. KVD L&L makes it even better - YZ responds very well to KVD L&L Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted October 8, 2015 Super User Posted October 8, 2015 Hybrid #6 has a breaking strength of 11.9 lbs. As Choporoz noted, any kink is a weak spot. The fluorocarbon component in the line can crack, but with any line you must be diligent in checking the line for cuts and abrasions.    Quote
Cmiller Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 I really like p-line floroclear, it has excellent manageability, and less stretch than mono. Quote
Jaw1 Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 P-line is all I use anymore, but I like the yozuri hybrid also both serve me well Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 8, 2015 Super User Posted October 8, 2015 This topic my be the more confusing than any other. Define copolymer fishing line? What is a hybrid fishing line? What is mono line? How do they differ? 1. Copolymer line is a blend of 2 polymers, they are mixed during the pellet melt cycle when extruding the line into 1 filament. 2. Hybrid line is 2 polymers,1 Nylon and 1 fluorocarbon that are co extruded. The nylon polymer is the core and the fluorocarbon is extruded over the nylon becoming the outer surface of the single filament line. 3. Mono has become the term for single filament Nylon polymer line. 4. All of the above single filament lines are monofilament or single filament strand of fishing line, they appear or look the same. How do they differ? Fluorocarbon is heavier than Nylon and less flexible, it's not stronger or doesn't have higher physical strength, therefore it stretches equally to Nylon. Nylon absorbs water, fluorocarbon doesn't. Nylon being lighter weight tends to float on top of the water, fluorocarbon sinks. Fluorocarbon is claimed to be less visible to fish do to lower refraction of light...who knows how fish see line or care? Single filament line that measures the same diameter have nearly equal strength, that includes all of the above; mono, copolymer and fluorocarbon and they all stretch equally. The primary difference being coefficient of drag going through water, fluorocarbon has less than Nylon and fluorocarbon sinks where Nylon tends to float. The downside of fluorocarbon is it's less flexible and tends to break if bent or notched (low notch strength) resulting in lower knot strength. Copolymer single filament line offers blended additives to help increase strength (questionable), self lubricate, improve heat resistance and UV resistance compared to a single polymer Nylon line. Hybrid single filament line claims to be less visible like fluorocarbon with a fluorocarbon jacket and remain flexible with good knot strength like Nylon. Hybrid sinks slower than fluorocarbon, stretches and is the same strength as Nylon or "mono" line. Beware that line manufacturers have learned to increase the line diameter and label the larger diameter (thicker) with lower pound test rating. Evaluate all single filament line by it's diameter, do not be fooled by (thick line) with larger diameters, unless that doesn't matter to you. Bottom line; no difference between "mono", copolymer and hybrid single filament fishing line, fluorocarbon offers less drag coefficient, heavier and sinks with less knot strength. No panacea in fishing line. Tom 3 Quote

Super User WRB Posted October 9, 2015 Super User Posted October 9, 2015 To convert mm to inches X .03937, .43mm = 0.0169 The 20 lb line chart ranges from .47mm / .0185 to .37mm / .0145.... That is like comparing apples to oranges! Sunline wasn't listed, should be similar to Seaguar line data. Good stuff, you should be able to see why line diameter is important. Tatsu, the gold standard for fluorocarbon line, is listed near the bottom because it's rates the line diameter (.0145) to lb test (20.9) is labeled honestly. Tom Quote
Super User Catt Posted October 9, 2015 Super User Posted October 9, 2015 Berkley Big Game is the highest abrasion resistant & shock absorption. In the real world those two qualities out weigh every thing else! 1 Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted October 9, 2015 Super User Posted October 9, 2015 Catt you have caught more bass than I ever will. In spite of that, I will take a good fluorocarbon or copolymer every time, except for crankbaits. WRB all of your data does not reflect the way a line feels when fished. That is information that cannot be ignored IMO. 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 9, 2015 Super User Posted October 9, 2015 Catt you have caught more bass than I ever will. In spite of that, I will take a good fluorocarbon or copolymer every time, except for crankbaits. WRB all of your data does not reflect the way a line feels when fished. That is information that cannot be ignored IMO.You need to explain to me what you mean by feel.Consider this fact: I started using Sunline Shooter in 1995, that is 20 years of feeling FC line when jig and worm fishing. Prior to 1995 I used Maxima, P-line CXX copolymer and Berkely XT and Big game for jig and worm fishing since the early 60's...over 30 years using mono prior to FC line a total of over 50 years fishing jigs and worms from depths of 1' to 80' , averaging over 5 DD bass per year, that is what I base my information on. When I say line diameter is important it's because all other line properties are based on diameter; abrasion resistance, knot strength, impact strength, memory, tensile strength, coefficient of drag, line reel management, etc, etc. Don't you wonder how we managed to detect strikes, set hooks and land thousands of bass, hundreds of giant bass using mono line before FC line became available? I changed to FC because it offers a straighter distance between my rod tip and jig or worm, less line bow, less drag = better strike detection and anything that improves strike detection and doesn't diminish number of strikes is good. The down side to FC is reduced knot and impact strength, you must tie perfect knots and be ready for sudden forces applied by the bass to reduce breaking off big and for those reasons I prefer mono line at night. I have changed my mono to Sunline Armilo Defier Nylon for swimbaits and considering it for all my bass fishing. Tom Quote
