Topwaterspook Posted October 18, 2015 Author Posted October 18, 2015 Bill, just thank A-Jay. I think he sent it down my way first. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted October 21, 2015 Super User Posted October 21, 2015 Do you hunt by the moon phases? When I'm bass fishing during the full moon phase of course I see the deer moving all hours of the day. They call it a hunters moon right? It lights the forest up at night. Do you rattle? Remember when a bucks running, whistle, he'll stop, you shoot. I do that when I see bucks out of season of course. When the season is open they know it. Out of season keep that moultrie feeder going all winter till spring with that molasses coated corn. When hunting season comes they will hang out there. Or they use tractor supply deer blocks. Bigger ones the bears take my little Apple blocks. I don't hunt at home. But in vt at my camp it's one on one. Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted October 21, 2015 Super User Posted October 21, 2015 Hunt the does.. Kill your buck. Rattling will still work for a good 7 to 10 days, then does will start estrous. Forget rattling at this time.. Hunt the doe groups. Does are still feeding normally, it's the bucks who are driven insane at this time. Quote
Topwaterspook Posted October 22, 2015 Author Posted October 22, 2015 After 35 hours in tree stands, I finally saw a legal buck. It didn't give me a shot. 1 Quote
Super User bigbill Posted October 22, 2015 Super User Posted October 22, 2015 Rattle? I purchased a large and small of those bags of big pencil rattles. One for far away noise maker and the smaller one for close up shuttle rattles. It could pay off to squirt some for urine. Grunt?? Quote

I've had pretty good success grunting and rattling while the does were starting estrous. Some bucks get locked down, which drive the other bucks crazy and make them look for a fight. Last year had one come in on a string to rattling. He was so worked up I practically had to scream to stop him. Put a arrow in him at 7 steps, he turned ran out to 30 yards and turned around to bull up and start grunting for the fight... He didn't do well with the follow up shot. Looked like James Brown going through the field for 40 yards until he expired. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted October 24, 2015 Super User Posted October 24, 2015 Rattled a 4pt this morning then stalked this guy this evening. Spotted him 200 yards out so I speed walked down the hedgerow at him he was walking away same direction as me. I grunted to get his attention didn't think he could hear me then he spun 180 and ran at me so I jumped in the weeds and waited for him and videoed him at maybe 5yds if that. <embed width="600" height="361" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullscreen="true" allowNetworking="all" wmode="transparent" src="http://static.photobucket.com/player.swf"flashvars="file=http%3A%2F%2Fvid1106.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh367%2Facgeorge1025%2F1763C437-0954-4F58-AB8D-B999D5B6CC88_zps7bstsbgn.mp4"> Quote

Super User bigbill Posted October 27, 2015 Super User Posted October 27, 2015 The deer are hitting the scraps discount bread. Leafy vegetables. Quote
endless Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 This is my problem now on this new property. I got the property late and only spot I have to hunt now. But no real signs. I cannot make out the tracks either. 20 acres and no sign or camera action. Last Saturday I think I found a bed and got my camera over there. I'm going out this evening to check cams and put in a new tree stand climber. Not sure if all Dicks have them on sale or if still arr but the Summit Viper classic for $170. I'm taking Xbow with me unless I'm able to gry muzzle loader license. Hopefully I can cross a deer without startling it. Last Sat I basically walked whole property and not jump a single deer. Quote
Topwaterspook Posted November 3, 2015 Author Posted November 3, 2015 I've logged between 40 and 50 hours in treestands so far and only seen four deer. This is getting frustrating. Quote
Jtrout Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 Off the trail cam at my parents house the other day Quote
Super User bigbill Posted November 9, 2015 Super User Posted November 9, 2015 My buddy is into bow hunting. He uses rags tied to his hunting boots sprayed with a earth scent. IDK if it helps or not how much we cover up our scent. In the Apple orchard I would cut up apples to cover my scent. In the pines I would slice a branch so the pine scent would cover up my scent. I would hang out my jacket for days with Apple's in its pockets. I position my stand down wind. We try to do it right. We even put out the real scent glands with the juice. There's a 1/2 acre of alpha hidden in the national forest near my camp. It's full of deer beds. It's close to the Apple orchards. Find the food source look for there runs. We swore there were no deer up on the mountain. There below us in the valley. There habits changed. Quote
Topwaterspook Posted November 10, 2015 Author Posted November 10, 2015 Things have gotten better. In the last three days I have seen three different bucks. I had a 6 pt. tonight at 4 yards from the base of my tree. He spotted me when he stood on his hind legs to nibble a branch right below my stand. I need to see a legal buck or a good sized doe.......... Dang, as of now ; my venison bologna order still needs filled. 2 Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted November 15, 2015 Super User Posted November 15, 2015 Been the year of non shooters for me. I see deer bout 80% the time now but they are either does in the thick or small basket racks standing broad side in the open screaming shoot me. Last week of bow now I got till Friday to get it done. If one of the basket racks shows itself in range this week and has a big body it's getting smoked. Bought a new stand today also it's going up Tuesday in a nice prime spot. Sighted in or more like confirmed zero on the 12 and the 20 ga today also. Both them are good to go for this weekend. I know there's some Giants on the land I hunt just not seeing them even the trail cam can't get a clear pic. Co workers wife almost hit one and stopped and took a pic standing on the edge of the corn by my stand about 140" 10pt. I think it's the one that keeps going infront of my tail cams butt first so I can't see its whole rack. I still have 197 acres of standing corn all around the block I hunt so they have no reason to show themselves in the woods. Quote
Topwaterspook Posted November 16, 2015 Author Posted November 16, 2015 I struck out this archery season. Now I have to await buck season. I'll be concentrating more on helping some of the grandchildren connect. Quote

In PA that's a big NO-NO. The Game Commission has shut entire mountain sides down after bait has been found. Brian. Quote
Topwaterspook Posted December 2, 2015 Author Posted December 2, 2015 Very true. Baiting is not allowed. Quote
