stk44 Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 I need some recommendations on braided line. I will be getting my new Dobyns Champ 705 mag heavy and I'm pairing it with a revo MGX reel. It currently has 30 lb braid on it. My question is if I tie a leader on 70+ percent of the time, does it matter if I upsize my braid? I usually use no greater than a 17 lb flouro leader, so my line would only be as strong as the leader correct? Now, I also plan on doing some flipping and pitching with this rod, in this case, what size braid would you recommend? Thanks. Quote
poisonokie Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 50-65# power pro super slick. The 30# has more than enough breaking strain, but not much abrasion resistance and will dig down into your spool with heavy drag settings. Quote
Super User MickD Posted October 6, 2015 Super User Posted October 6, 2015 If you plan to use a leader in the 20# range I see no need to go up on line strength for most applications. Flipping is a different story, and you might want to consider braid in the range of 50 # test with no leader. Tie direct, lure to braid. In my opinion, the best braids are Power Pro and Suffix Premium braid. There may be others as good, but I am not familiar with them. When I try other brands, I sometimes get a surprise. With Power Pro and Suffix, high quality, good performance, no surprises. Quote
stk44 Posted October 6, 2015 Author Posted October 6, 2015 Thanks! I always use power pro, I've only used spider wire and fire line and power pro has been the best so far. I will try 50 lb. I didn't even think about it digging into the spool while flipping! Thanks again! 1 Quote

DaleGribble Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 If you aren't having issues with PP diggin in on itself then dont switch. IME PP is the worst braid I've tried for digging into itself. Its good braid otherwise, but I find upsizing necessary to avoid digging into itself. Quote
5fishlimit Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Seagaur Smackdown is my top choice for what you are doing. After having used PP, Sunline FX, and Suffix (Performance & 832) I feel that I get the best overall performance with the Smackdown. I would go with the 50#. Just my $0.02. Quote
Super User Oregon Native Posted October 9, 2015 Super User Posted October 9, 2015 Right now I'm using PP braid with leaders on everything. 30 an 40 for flippin....20 for footballs ... 15 for cranking and spinning. Love it...not having the digging problems, but then my drags aren't so tight that I can't pull some line out. Quote
