I am posting this question to get some thoughts on whether or not most anglers buy the same lures each year? And if so, do you buy lures for every season?

I am trying to figure out how to be better at fishing however my time to research and try different tactics is limited. I would like to be able to buy the same lures and keep with the ones that just work.

Anyone else use this method?

I do. But talk to others that fish where you do and you'll get a list of things to buy.

Look at the videos on this site and YouTube and you'll get a feel for the seasons to use them in.

Hello and Welcome to Bass Resource ~

My experiences have shown that by & large, certain techniques (and lures) seem to be somewhat seasonal and often do repeat themselves.

But year to year, conditions change as do the ecosysystems, which often results in fish relocation (depth change) as well as what bait the bass may be feeding on during any given season.

Adapting to the situation has seen me using some older baits effectively and some newer baits as well.

Your results may vary.

Thanks for some quick responses. I might research the basic go to lures, not brands because I know that could ignite a debate, and start from there.

I'm not new to fishing at all, but I do like to improve whenever possible.

I think I will narrow my choices to certain tactics and lures, and keep with those.

Thanks

True junkies and fishing degenerates will make sure they have plenty of their favorite confidence baits on hand every season, and then buy 5x as much other non-favorite/new baits that they'll never throw or catch fish on :)

My lures in my tackle box, everyone goes in the pool. Each one I have success with I buy more in different sizes and colors. I do purchase anything that looks like it will work.

I took a bath on the baitball lures nothing worked. I think this year I'm going to go thru my failed to produce cranks and cut the hooks off and make them Christmas ornaments.

I'm going to say this in hammering three spots every year what's really a hot bait this year might not be as hot next year. I'm seeing the hot baits change every year. The fish learns our baits? On a slow day change the flavor of your scent too. Ok try new baits. Be flexible. Try new different baits cheap, discounted, on clearance, on sale or expensive.

We never know what will work. Take the blinders off and start trying different baits.

It's a cycle every year, I still use my old stuff that I had luck with in the past, if I have no luck on that day with them I try my other lures that I didnt use last year....BUT still I always end up buying more stuff every year..its a losing battle- for my wallet anyway.

I dont get to fish often enough to try every new lure and technique that comes around . I study the conditions at hand and choose the technique and bait accordingly .

Welcome aboard!

For me, I will use old and new, but for the most

part, my "schtick" is soft plastics fished wacky,

whether weightless or weighted. Then I'll fish

TX, mojo, jigs, etc., not in any particular order.

I've found these to work pretty much year-round.

But I'm also in an area I can fish almost 12 months

out of the year.

Think of your tackle box as a tool box and lures as tools .Choose the right tool for the task .     There are thousands of scenarios  .

I buy baits I have confidence in on a yearly basis. I try to keep enough stocked that I don't run out, but I also branch out and try at least one new thing every year. Every technique that you can add that you can have confidence in is adding a tool to your tool box, so try to experiment a little bit.

No need to cut the hooks off, they make great hangers haha. I've used mine as ornaments for the last 4 or 5 years now and they actually look really good on there.

I have some rapala and Berkley cranks that couldn't catch a cold.

I have a few baits that have produced well and I make sure I always have those available for use.  But, variety is the spice of life and even if I had 5 magic lures that would catch me 90% of my fish, it feels good to throw something different and new and catch a fish on it, even if it isn't as productive.  I always buy new lures to try out, even though they may not catch any fish or be tough to get a bass to bite on.  Downside is that you end up with a bunch of stuff that you store and never use.

One thing that crossed my mind to figure out what works and doesn't work for me - if I took all of my plastics/hardbaits and dumped them into one giant pile on the floor, if I were only allowed to keep 100 items, what items would make that list.

Welcome to the BR site.

It's a good idea to add your regional location to help you with questions.

There isn't a short cut to learning, that takes experience and there isn't any panacea lure.

There are some basics and you get someone's "favorite" lure suggestions that worked for them.

Bass fishing success happens by being in the right location at the right time when bass are active and there isn't any way to predict what' lure the bass prefer before those conditions come together.

Bass are wonderful fish because they can be caught on a wide variety of lures and presentations.

The basics:

Soft plastic worms and craws fished with a bullet weight Texas rig.

Same as above fished on a weedless jig.

Senko's

Surface lure like a buzz bait.

Lipless crank bait.

Floating diving crank bait.

My suggestion, start with soft plastics and ask a few questions about one of the above as to a few choices.

Good luck.
