Mainebass1984 Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 A 2.5 pounder gobbled down this shrew. Circumstances unknown. 6 Quote
Super User geo g Posted October 3, 2015 Super User Posted October 3, 2015 Thanks for the report. Bass are clearly opportunistic. If it fits in there mouth, its on the menu! I once saw a baby duck following mother suddenly disappear in an explosion of water. Beautiful scenery in the background. It must be so peaceful. Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted October 3, 2015 Super User Posted October 3, 2015 That's not an adult beverage sitting in the corner? 2 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted October 3, 2015 Super User Posted October 3, 2015 That's a mole, not a shrew, FWIW. Paddle feet, much larger than a shrew. Hungry bass, though. Wonder how it wandered into the water to be eaten by a bass. Very cool. 2 Quote
Mainebass1984 Posted October 3, 2015 Author Posted October 3, 2015 That's not an adult beverage sitting in the corner? Ofcourse it isn't. That's a mole, not a shrew, FWIW. Paddle feet, much larger than a shrew. Hungry bass, though. Wonder how it wandered into the water to be eaten by a bass. Very cool. I don't know my rodents very well at all. I showed the picture to a friend at work and he said it was most likely an American water shrew. Pretty cool that bass still wanted to eat even with that sticking out of its throat. 1 Quote
Bass newb Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 Cool find. I caught a bass that had three crawdads in his belly. He still wanted my worm. Quote
Super User Montanaro Posted October 4, 2015 Super User Posted October 4, 2015 Ground probably collapsed and fell in water. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted October 4, 2015 Super User Posted October 4, 2015 Nothing is safe if it moves and fits in there mouth. This is why I chuckled when they predicted the snake heads would take over our fish population. I feel the bass can hold there own as predators along with the great northern pike and muskies. Don't forget the feisty chain pickerel too. When a bait, any bait moves it's eaten. Some of the videos on you tube are awesome. Fish with a plastic mouse. 1 Quote

Dtree11 Posted October 4, 2015 Posted October 4, 2015 Looks like I have a new top water bait to try. Quote

Aldo Rosado Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 A 14 lb. Bass will swallow a 2 lb. Bass their canabals Quote
Mainebass1984 Posted October 7, 2015 Author Posted October 7, 2015 If it moves they will try to eat, birds, snakes, fish, mammals, etc. It is always cool to actually find the evidence of what we would perceive as an unusual meal. It is probably more common then we realize. Quote
BaitMonkey1984 Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 Gross. And that's why I'll never eat a freshwater bass. I have eaten a few out of curiosity, probably 3 in my lifetime. Nice healthy looking 2-3 lbs. I marinated them for a day and the cooked up nice. I have tried all of the fish from the lake and wonder why warm water fish get a bad rap- they taste good if you prepare it well. Have ate pickerel, bass, and catfish, all very good. Quote
