brianmcg321 Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 Hello, I'm a beginner, so new in fact I haven't even bought a pole. We recently moved near the Hiwassee river in Georgetown TN. We have a couple of ponds on ours and our neighbors land that have some small perch in it and while taking my 6yr old daughter fishing with her Barbie pole she said, "Daddy, why don't you have a pole?" And I thought to myself, Yeah, why don't I. So after lurking hear reading every article and watching just about every video by bassresource on youtube I guess its finally time to buy me a pole and some tackle and get after it. I've already read just about every forum thread on what a beginner should buy so I won't bore you with any repetitive questions, I'll just post my new stuff in another thread when I pick it up. This site is phenomenal for learning the basics of bass fishing. You can start with live baits like nightcrawlers, then the simplest - at least in my opinion - way to fish is called wacky rigging. Simple hook in the 2, 1, 1/0 range and buy some 4" and 5" stick worms - commonly called Senkos. Bend the worm in half and at the bend in the worm, run the hook through it - perpendicular to the worm. You can buy hooks like Gamakatsu Wide Gap Finesse in sizes I mentioned. When you throw it out - near fallen timber, docks, etc., just let it fall in the water column on its own. The falling action does the rest. Pause a few seconds, then twitch your rod back up, lifting the bait, and then let it fall again. Oh, and hang on to your rod Quote

Oh, and hang on to your rod Yes, a big part of my new tackle was some 5" senkos, watermelon, with 2/0 and 4/0 hooks. I read the "Guaranteed to Catch Bass" thread by roadwarrior and it was some basic advice I was looking for. Quote

Be careful this get addictive and expensive quick, I am new also. 30 days ago went to Bass Pro to get bass rod and reel, had no idea of the changes in fishing over past 15-20 years. In last 30 days have bought 3 rods/reels, some new lures and having a ton of fun and catching nice fish. Folks here are great and have been very helpful. Quote

Fishing is about having fun and those "expectations" will take the fun out of it. If you are happy with a cane pole, some string, a bobber, a hook, and some worms, that's great. The bait monkey won't like you, that's for sure. The real beauty about fishing is that we can all do it our way. Quote
