My builder will be starting a rod for me in the next couple of weeks. I'm still trying to decide which reel seat to go with.

Suggestions with pics and opinions needed. My favorite seat is the Team Lews split. I don't think I can buy it anywhere.

Can't the builder recommend appropriate options? Grip and seat are very personal preferences key to a true custom. What someone else likes or not may be of little help. Split seats are a good example. They're a love or hate it proposition in large part. What are the build details?

I want a Toad Rod.. Can't look at anything where I am so its my only option. Looking at two blanks with him next week. I want plenty of backbone with a MF tip.

I haven't discussed the reel seat in detail with him yet however he is familiar with Lews. A mag blank is questionable. I don't think I need that much rod and I don't want the added weight.

7'-7'6"

1/4-1- 1 1/4oz

65lb braid

SIC concept guides

11" Portuguese full cork handle

No hook keeper

5oz max

I'll trust him with the engineering.. That parts not in my wheel house.

I emailed Lews to see if it was available to me at retail.

It is all a matter of personal preference. Some of the popular seats, I can't stand. I think they are ungodly uncomfortable. Those would be the Fuji SK2, Pac Bay Minima and Fuji ACS. I have one rod left in my arsenal with an ACS, and as soon as I finish my new jerkbait rod, i'll be selling it off too.

In my hand, I really like the Fuji ECS. I have one of the new Fuji PTS to try too.

One of the Rods I really liked was the Powell. If not for those SK2 seats it would have been a keeper. Especially the 6'8" rod. At first I was just going to go with a common Fuji. But if I can get the Lews or similar I'd rather have it.  I'll search and have a look at the two you mentioned.

Ok so I saw the ECS seat.. Looks typical in the pics. What do you see or feel that is different about it?

I saw the PTS. I don't think I would be comfortable with this one. The drop on the top side of the back seat would be a stopper for me.

I like a consistent transition and a longer trigger.

I'm don't think I can explain why I like the ECS more. It fits my hand better than the ACS.

My G Loomis 734 has the ECS... It's a fine seat.  I still prefer the Lews.

It's a matter of personal preference based on comfort. They all serve the same purpose. You might want to look at the Alps srsgc split seat, though the trigger is shorter than you like.

I did a seach to check it out. That seat looks pretty good.. I found it on the Get Bit site. I also saw a few others that look interesting.

Thx for the tip..

I suppose the wise thing to do would be ordering in five or six and getting a look and feel.

Or just go to your local store and fondle some rods. Most off the shelf rods are built with all these reel seats. Only a handful of companies have proprietary reel seats.

that reel seat on the Lew's is a cut down Fuji ACS .....

if your handy with a dremel , you can cut an ACS down then sand it to exactly imitate the Lew's seat

Phenix used to cut down ACS reel seats and make them into split reel seats also , i think Fuji took note of the appeal of the seat and came out with the SK2 split reel seat ..

You know I kept looking at the two of them. I saw the similarity.

You just confirmed my thoughts. Thx for that!

Question has been answered and final decision made.

have you tried the Fuji SK2 split reel seat ? i feel it's just like the ACS reel seat but more smoother in the trigger , the ACS has more sharper lines making it a little uncomfortable .

Keith at Powell sent me a 7'3" mag rod with the SK2 seat.

I loved everything about the rod except for that seat. It was to small for

me. I found it uncomfortable and also tough to keep hold of

the rod,

as you know on the Lews rods the rest seat is cut short on

the cork side too. ( That may be part of the seat design) That is very comfortable in my hand. I get a great grip.

I can cast it all day..

I had a full cork grip added to this rod.

We (sanded) tapered The rear of the seat to fit the cork.

For me it's a total "10" fit.

That's why I didn't like the ACS.  Also, I built 2 rods for a customer, both using the SK2, one for jigs and one for jerkbaits.  He said he loves it on the jig rod, but after a couple hours of jerkbait fishing, he had a blister on his hand.

Definitely the ACS. Builders ordering it in. If you build another

Try this seat with the center crap cut out. Best I've ever held.

The ACS is "much larger" than the SK2. It's the same diameter

As the ECS.

the SK2 takes a little to get used to . most people who palm their reel , lay their little finger against the trigger as opposed to wrapping your little finger around the trigger , that's how i do it and it is very comfortable .

Early on with it I just couldn't get comfortable with it.

After an hour of fishing with it I liked it less.. As the day

went on it was less and less.

Glad you like it.

My new build is getting the cut ACS.. No question about it!

That void is filled.. I'll use this on every rod I have built.
