Hey guys,

Im a shore fisherman that never got into jerkbaits. I got some crank, lipless, top water and the whole soft plastic madness. Now, I want to get into some jerkbaits.

I know they are a world of its own but, what I actually need is some references because I dont have money to buy a big lot of them.

So basically Im looking for 3 right now. 1 for top and possible the first 3 ft, and medium depth (between 2 and maybe 6 ) and one that goes deeper than 6. I never get access to deeper than lets say 12 ft.

I would like to have some dark color options in that line.

So, what do you guys suggest?

best!

Whats your budget per bait? Also, for up to 3ft or so, I would do a weightless fluke.

I dont know, may be no more than 12 per lure? also, I have no idea what a fluke is! lol

Something to consider, if you're fishing from shore, soft plastic jerk baits might be the way to go.  Flukes (made by Zoom) are one option, there are many others.  These days, it seems I go to Sebile Magic Swimmers first.  Strike King Caffeine Shads are decent soft plastic jerk baits also.  Also senko style baits can be fished as jerk baits as well.

Hard jerk baits, Rapala & Rogues are a good place to start - they are relatively cheap ( compared to Lucky Craft or other more expensive imports).

If you're getting into jerk baits, get some lead tape, suspend dots or something like that.   That is what you use to fine tune how the baits suspend.

Be mindful that different baits suspend differently in different wear temperatures.

Prime jerk bait season is a relatively short window in the spring, at least here in Missouri where I live.  Plus it is addictive, in a decade or so I went from a couple of Rapala & Redfins to way over a hundred.   Many of them I've never gotten wet.  If I lived n the north east, fishing from the bank, I think soft plastic jerk baits are the way to go.

Jerkbait season is coming up here in PA , it may be right now for you, but that is suspending jerkbaits. I use jerkbaits all year but I use floating style jerkbaits when the water temp runs higher than 62 degrees. The short time I had with the Rapala Shadow Rap told me it is a killer bait, so grab a shallow and deep version of those. The Elite 8 Rattlin Rogue, those are very good and they will get down close to 8' on 10lb line. The best deep diving jerkbait I know of is the Luck Craft Staysee but I wouldn't throw it from shore, I'd opt for the deep husky jerk from Rapala. Those baits I mention are less expensive and it will let you enough money to get an extra bait or 2, and before I forget, the award for best cheap jerkbait goes to Storm for the Twitch Stick! I really like them and I have an assortment of both the size 10 and size 8, the only problem is the size 8 wants to float to fast and I found a single suspend dot right before the front treble is all it takes to make it suspend really well. The size 10 is 5/8oz so it is at the maximum of your range but the rod should be able to handle it.

My staples.

Flashminnow

Pointer/ Slender Pointer

Staysee.

(don't pay retail)

I do have a couple slow-risers too, but nothing that's a super-floater like the rapala original (get one if you don't have one).

Grass, little bass,... and mega bass? (I think I paid around $15 in trade value for it)

keep your eyes on the flea market forum.  sounds like you essentially have about a $35 budget...  for that much you can find some decent lures pop up on here from time to time.  like deep, i don't pay full retail if possible.

lucky craft pointers, and rapala floaters are my favorites that can be found in your price range if you look.

I have loved the Super Fluke every since i saw one of them used,a friend of mine gave my son a few of them & i sat back & watched him catch bass after bass,i was hooked for life on them, they also cast good on a baitcaster .My son told me one day that i should put a fluke on every rod i had because its was all i wanted to fish & he was right. My three main colors would be White Pearl ,BubbleGum,& BabyBass. And as Jimmy Houston would say : You can't fish them wrong as long as you fish them slow.  God Bless & Romans 10:9

Since you are throwing from shore I am not sure I would go the Lucky Craft route. Otherwise I would say go Pointer 78 and Flashminnow 95 and be done. Maybe Pointer 100 also but not as your starting point.

But since you wont be getting your bait back when you snag maybe look at the XR08, XR10 and Rattlin Rogue.

Also, I would consider passing on the deeper running baits. They are not worth the fuss in my opinion. I cannot see a lot of situations where this would be practical from shore as I only seldom find use for them from a boat.

I use all megabass and lucky craft out of the boat, but from shore you should check out the strike King kvd jerkbaits, rapala shadow and x-raps, and smith wick rougues. All of which are easily and readily available.

The shadow rap is a nice jerkbait for the money. They run $8 each. $32 gets you 2 regular and 2 deep. That'll cover you down to 12ft.

If you have an academy sports nearby, ignore all of the above great advice....and go buy a selection of H2o jerkbaits. They have very good, very nice jerkbaits for $5 or less. Then, once you get a feel for it....and you've decided it's something you want to obsess over.... Go and pick up any of the ones mentioned above.

I have a box full of h2o's and a handful of higher end jerkbaits for when the fish are being super finicky.
