Mossyoakglock Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 Is there a difference in the mirrored qualities between the glass and plastic? Green mirror specifically? I don't like to be able to see my eyes through the sunglasses and didn't know if the glass mirror lense has a better mirrored finish then the plastic. Quote
Kidflex Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 I was told the mirrored lenses were only offered in glass. Not sure when they stopped making them in polycarbonate. I was just informed of this when I bought a pair of blue mirrored 580 costas this past Sunday at cabelas. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted October 1, 2015 Super User Posted October 1, 2015 The green mirror on glass isn't super intense. There are certain lights you can see through them, but in most light it's intense enough that you can't. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10205254275308885&l=f20d5cf0fe Quote
Mossyoakglock Posted October 2, 2015 Author Posted October 2, 2015 They still make the Green Mirror in poly. I just bought the fantail in green mirror 580P. The mirror is good but it's not as good as my Oakleys mirrored lenses are. I'm wanting to get a pair in glass lenses and didn't know if the glass lenses are more "mirrored" then the poly. Thinking of going with the Silver Mirror in 580G. Quote
bassinhole Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 Costas are great glasses and the company has a wonderful group of loyal consumers who's personal and political views should align well with most of the folks on this forum. But, me being on a tight budget; I'd take the money used for the Costas and put it towards something more useful. Functionally any pair of Polarized glasses are identical to the next. I've owned costas and sold them after realizing this little fact. The Important things to consider when picking glasses are Fit, Weight, and lens color. However, if you are trying to make a statement, earn points with the cool kids, and support the initiatives Costa is pursuing; go for it! Costa is a respectable company who supports conservation. They sponsor many fishing tournaments and other outdoor events. Not a bad group of folks to slide a few extra bucks towards when you have them to spare. Here's a video of an honest opinion and side by side comparison of Costas vs $5 box store specials Quote
Bass newb Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 Walmart has srike king polarized black frame glasses that look great fit great and have a good color to them. I like them better than my spider wire polarized lenses that i also bought from wal mart. $17 and $14 for each. I've lost both pairs within a month of ownership. That is the prime reason that I won't buy high dollar glasses. That and the fact that scratches bother the holy h3ll out of me. Quote
JOBU1967 Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 I own 6 pairs of polarized glasses. Oakley's, Costa's, Wiley X, & a couple of el cheapo Cabela's & Bass Pro Shop brands. When I'm sight fishing (I'm a weak angler lol) I can see bass 10-15 feet deep with all 6 pairs. I can't tell the difference between the expensive ones from the cheap ones. The Cabelas & Bass Pro Shops cost $5 a pair the others were over $150 a pair. Quote

And the costas still have a lot more mileage left of them also maintaining a lifetime warranty that I haven't needed to use yet.I agree with you, clarity isn't much different, but that's where the similarities end. Performance, quality, safety and most imprtantly comfort are what makes expensive glasses worth it. Quote
desmobob Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 There IS a difference between inexpensive polarized glasses and top-quality polarized glasses. Most of it has to do with the quality of the lens coatings, as well as the lens materials and design. It's a lot like the difference between a Kodak camera lens and Leica camera lens. Or between a pair of Tasco and Zeiss binoculars. Or between a Bushnell and Swarovski spotting scope. If you think the only difference is the price, you're kidding yourself; there is a performance difference as well. Tight lines, Bob (saving up for some Maui Jim polarized sunglasses) Quote
Mossyoakglock Posted October 2, 2015 Author Posted October 2, 2015 I appreciate all the opinions but I disagree that cheap and expensive are the same. The quality of the expensive glasses are far greater. I wear contacts and can tell a huge difference between a cheap lens and an expensive lens. The clarity is far superior. Back to the original question. Is the mirror finish better on the glass vs the poly? 1 Quote
Klebs01 Posted October 4, 2015 Posted October 4, 2015 I have the 580g and my wife has the 580p. Not sure I can tell a difference on the mirror finish. P are definitely lighter. The glass more scratch resistant and I think slightly clearer. We are both happy with our choice. Quote
