Chris186 Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 Just wondering how much time you guys have to fish, and how much more time you would like to have? For me working second shift and going to school a couple mornings during the week, I find that it's only really the weekends that I have time to fish. But Saturday morning is tough when you work until 11pm Friday then try to get up at 4 or 5am. Also because of my boat storage situation, it's kind of a hassle during the week to go at all. I feel like once a weekend just isn't enough, and it's kind of putting out my fishing fire. Does anyone else have a similar feeling because of not fishing enough? Quote
ljd1971 Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 My dad used to always say that you don't take time to go fishing, you make time to go fishing. I never really understood what he meant when I was young, but now that I have a family, career, mortgage, etc. I totally get it. I got away from fishing for 7-8 years due to so-called "time restraints," but now I'm back and mad at myself for getting away from it. My advice to you (not that you asked) is to make time and keep at it. 1 Quote

Skeeter Dan Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 Due to health problems I'm not able to work. I could fish seven days a week if I had the money to cover it. Because of lack of funds I'm only able to fish one to two times a month and limited to where I can go. The better places to go are two and a half to three hours away. Once again lack of funds. So if it's not work! it's always something. Make the time even if it's just to go to a friends small pond. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted October 1, 2015 Super User Posted October 1, 2015 I'm kind of lucky since I'm done at 3:30 Monday through Thursday and done at 12:30 on Friday. Now that the days are getting shorter it's tougher to get out after work but I'm usually on the water on average of 4 days a week. During the summer, week nights will be about 4 1/2 to 5 hours and weekends will be 10 or so. In my mind, I still don't fish enough or as much as I want. If I could fish that much though I'd be out there almost every day all day. Quote

Super User Ratherbfishing Posted October 1, 2015 Super User Posted October 1, 2015 I find it difficult, sometimes, to justify some of the purchases and "psychic energy" I invest for the "less than ideal" amount of time in which I go fishing. Once could say I "choose" to not go out more often (which is partially true) but when I go fishing, I prefer to make the expenditure worth my while. If there were opportunities closer to home, I'd probably go out about once every other day-at least for a few hours. But the opportunities/resources just aren't there. And though I bought some baits which I call my "Canada baits", I did not make it to Canada (or Minnesota/Wisconsin/Michigan) this year and it gnaws at me more than a little. Quote

Super User bigbill Posted October 1, 2015 Super User Posted October 1, 2015 Leave the boat home and fish from shore sometime. It's only fishing backwards than the boat anyway. I fished 5/6 days a week when I worked from shore. When I retired at 52yo I had more time to fish. My older brother would fish in the dark for stripers(saltwater), blues, mackerel early in the mornings then go to work. Sleep,eat,kiss momma goodbye, fish. It's worse than a job. It's an addiction. No boat allows me to gun and run between my spots that are close together. I also have productive areas on bigger lakes that no one realises is there. They just don't know where the hot spots are with no hummingbird cast out fish finder I use it to see how it's structured that tells me how to fish it with what bait. I don't use it to find fish. Usually at least twice a month, and since my dad is retired he's always looking to get out of the house and fishing in the Jon Boat. I go bank fishing during the week at least once usually. If I didn't have a lady, it would be every weekend but I kind of like having her around. The things we sacrifice to keep others happy................ Quote
Super User bigbill Posted October 1, 2015 Super User Posted October 1, 2015 Taking the wife out for breakfast, lunch, or dinner or a trip to the mall shopping helps in having more time to fish. The wife also walks our dog while I fish. My point is don't let life pass you by get fishing more. Marriage is a partnership work it out. Treat the wife good and let her know she is special and fishing is your passion. I told mine I could be in the bar every night, chasing women, getting in trouble. I'd rather be fishing. Stop wishing and start fishing I got old overnight. I'm 65yo and don't remember how I got old. Time I wish I had more time to fish. I couldn't find a better partner to raise my children. An "average" week for me would be 2-3 nights a week after work for 2-4 hours depending on what time we finished up. And then one day every weekend (usually Sunday) quite often from sun up till sundown. Sometimes I get several week days to fish all day if we're slow at work, or weather is not conducive to farming. At the end of the season, my boat has typically been in the water 125+ times from early/mid April to mid/late November. Quote
Dtree11 Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 I was working a Job that required 62 hours a week. So, I found a new job that pays a little less, but allows me to have normal 8am to 4pm hours. Although, it might be easier said than done. I would look into a new job that would allow you to fish more. Another thought, I am sure there has to be some out there who work 2nd shift that just fish late at night. Is this frowned upon? I know it might be a little dangerous. Quote
Robeng Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 Either life responsibilities, or weather may keep me from fishing. Thugh, here in Michigan fro spring thru fall, I usually only get out 10-12 times. Anywhere from an all day to 3-4 hours. That does make it special, but wish I could do more. If its real windy, the 16 foot aluminum is not good on the larger lakes. This year, only 8 times so far. Hope October affords a few more times. Quote

In fact when I am not on the water, I am obsessively thinking all week about what my fishing plan of attack is going to be for the weekend. Weather forecast is checked at least once a day. Being in MN, May through Oct are really the only months I like to be on open water. Nov through Apr is spent obsessing over May through OCT. You see the pattern here? I need help. 1 Quote
clh121787 Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 I work 2 weeks straight away from home. And then get a week off. 2 weeks on 1 week off. Single no children. On my week off I fish atleast 3 days a week. Sometimes all seven. When I was married I didn't travel for work.and still fished almost as much. In the mornings or when she was working when ever.it makes me happy that's what I do. I don't golf,gamble,cheat, havnt had a drop of alcohol in 2 years. My release is going fishing. Or being alone in the outdoors. Where I can't hear cars honking, horns blowing people talking etc. Being out in the woods, especially by or on the water is truly my happy place... Blow Up Your TV, throw away your paper. Go to the country, build you a home. Plant a little garden, eat a lot of peaches. Try and find Jesus on your own" J.D. 1 Quote
bassinhole Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 My grampa always told me the best time to fish is... "When you get a chance" And I have yet to find any evidence to the contrary. The chances present themselves frequently. I take steps to capitalize on them as often as possible. I keep at least one rod in my truck at all times. If I'm driving without a deadline I'll often stop at nearby ponds and make a few casts here and there. Going fishing doesn't have to be a date on the calendar or an extravagant trip. It should never feel like an imposition. The more time you spend fishing, the more time you will want to spend fishing. If it's important to you, you'll find a way to make it happen. Otherwise you'll find an excuse why it didn't. 1 Quote

You may not catch anything but at least you are giving it a try. Otherwise, I like to fish on weekdays when others are not on the water. Quote
PAPADUDE Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 I'm retired and will turn 70 in a couple of months. 30 years ago I started thinking about retirement and bought 160 acres of timber in southern Iowa and built two ponds on it. Now all I have to do is deer hunt and bass fish. The Boss Lady and I also own a bass boat and we have been going out 4 or 5 afternoons a week, She is a bass fishing nut and the best fishing partner I have ever had. here is our little piece of heaven. free image uploading 4 Quote
