Super User bigbill Posted September 30, 2015 Super User Posted September 30, 2015 Did you know on the 101 great invention list the fiberglass rod is number 100. When the Chinese embargo started we didn't import there bamboo anymore so the fiberglass rod was invented. inc 1 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted September 30, 2015 Super User Posted September 30, 2015 Yup - and interestingly enough - it beat out duct tape. A-Jay Quote
Super User Raul Posted September 30, 2015 Super User Posted September 30, 2015 Oh yes, China is the only country on the face of the Earth where bamboo grows ..... Quote
Super User bigbill Posted September 30, 2015 Author Super User Posted September 30, 2015 There isn't much history written on fishing. We need to share every little piece of history we learn about. I have a collection of steel rods there baitcasters with there original reels. One is a telescopic steel fly rod. Quote

Super User bigbill Posted October 1, 2015 Author Super User Posted October 1, 2015 No I don't use them I have a museum How did they ever fish with those older antique bait casting reels? I guess they put loose line out like a fly rod then cast. Quote

I guess way back then it was considered a talent to artfully string together a big group of naughty words after a bad cast. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted October 2, 2015 Author Super User Posted October 2, 2015 This was life before spinning reels? That had to be tough using those reels. When I handle those reels I think about the fisherman who came before us actually using these first bait casting reels when they were the latest and greatest hi tech stuff offered in there era. I wonder what they would say if they seen what we have today. My steel rods and antique casting reels go back three generations of the man's family I got them from. I do this for fun to be able to touch the past history of fishing equipment and really be thankful for what we use today. Lots of engineering goes into our reels. Many hours and lots of coffee. Quote
OnthePotomac Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 We encountered massive bamboo thickets in the central highland in Vietnam so thick you could not walk through them. The bamboo itself was huge in diameter and very, very tall. The Rhada tribe I lived with used it to build their elevated long houses. Quote
