poisonokie Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 I have a t3 1016 with an sv1000 shallow spool and hedgehog air bearing and it makes a killer bfs reel on a major craft volkey 68L/bfs. Before that with the stock spool I used it for basically everything from pitching jigs to cranks. I also have a t3 ballistic with that 1016 spool and abec 5 bearings on a 7'7" composite cranking rod. Does the job exceedingly well and the extra weight in the driveshaft helps balance the rod better. The magforce 3d makes it a very versatile reel. Definitely my personal favorite. Quote

The other is used for wobble heads and chatterbaits on a champ 734. One uses 12# fluoro amd the other uses 15. They can really do anything. Mag3d is very user friendly. The only gripe i have is the 1016 spool is "too tame" Quote

Super User new2BC4bass Posted October 1, 2015 Super User Posted October 1, 2015 Three 1016s....all on MH rods. Have other reels for the light stuff. I've said it before...and no doubt will say it again....the MagForce 3D braking is the best. Very hard to backlash. Only reel I can cast with brakes set at zero. I don't limit their use to any specific lure or technique. Excellent all-around reels. Quote

There are many different variations of the reel (1016, Ballistic, SV, MX, FX, etc.) Another good thing is that there are many tuning options as well from spools, to gears, and other various parts. I have a T3 MX that is the 8:1 reel. It casts well at 3/8 oz and above. Some complain about the fram material and the hood popping up being annoying. Personally I think the hood is a fun feature and the reel feels great to me and incredibly smooth. I would not recommend the reel for high resistance baits but that is just my preference. I prefer aluminum frame reels for that. I would be interested to know what you had in mind for intended apps for the reel? Which exact model were you looking at? Quote

Took one with me to Florida last year. Wasn't long before I was trying to engage the spool on my other reels with my thumb. Mine are two 1016s and an MX. To make the 1016 work in the ballistic I had to find a way to increase spool tension. It's not something you think about at first since they don't need much mechanical braking, but I think the spool shaft on the 1016 is a bit shorter. If you have an old MasterCard, cut out one of the circles on the MasterCard logo. It fits perfectly down inside the cast control cap and shims it up. I noticed I had to back the tension way off my 1016 to get an sv spool to fit for just the opposite reason. Quote

Well...slap me upside the head. Duh. Maybe I should pay better attention to what I am reading...you think? Purchased used. Quite certain is is a factory spool. Seller did upgrade a bushing to a bearing....handle side I think, but I've never messed with a reel other than to swap spools. Quote

On occasions the line will begin on the flat spots on each side of the groove and then fall into the groove causing on even line lay. It happens to me from time to time. Cast fine as long as one side hasn't built up to the point the line rubs. Uneven line lay can be attributed to line not always falling into the line guide groove. On occasions the line will begin on the flat spots on each side of the groove and then fall into the groove causing on even line lay. It happens to me from time to time.
