Trokar Wacky Hook Vs Gamakatsu Results

Just wondering your guys experience with Trokar wacky hooks. I am used to using the gamakatsu wacky style hooks with senkos for catching largemouthbass in my pond and today I decided to try the high dollar Trokar hooks hoping to have a high catch rate but I experienced the opposite. In an hour of fishing I went 0/11. 11 fish on and not one put in my kayak. The previous 2 nights I was about 20/25 with similar size gamakatsu hooks.

I don't think any trokar hooks are all that great, aside from the flipping hooks. They are just too heavy. I'd pick gamakatsu over them any time, and owner over those. Lighter hooks just require lighter drags and hook sets. So you can't reel in a tree limb without straightening them out. Who cares? That's not what's important.

Secondly, I don't use either of those - I'm on the Owner Band Wagon for my Wacky needs.

I just use the owner octopus hooks, no wacky needed for me.

I've tried Trokar hooks and have not been impressed. Personally use Eagle Claw hooks for about anything anymore. A lot of guys look down on EC hooks but they've revamped almost their entire lineup while keeping their prices very reasonable. 

 

I used the Gamakatsu wide gap finesse hooks previously for my wacky rigs and they worked very well.

Bluebasser86 is on the same page as I am. The black nickel Laser Sharp model Eagle Claw hooks are one of the best bang for your buck out there, I now use them over Mustad. For Wacky hooks it is the simple Gamakatsu octopus hook but flipping, Trokar gets the nod but truth be told, I do use a few different model trokar hooks. As I said, I like the flipping hook as well as the HD worm hook which I use 2 different styles of worms but after that I use a lot of the Laser Sharp.

I concur.  The Laser Sharp are pretty dang good.  My problem is nobody around here carries them or I'd buy them more often.

Those green owners are down right evil. They're often a mission to get out of the fish's mouth as they stick in there so well.

Owner wacky hooks are great!  I use the weedless version a lot.  I've also been happy with the Decoy brand weedless wacky hooks.

Well, I think your results might have to do with the nature of the hook being a "cutting" point instead of a "conical" point. Owner makes versions of both and I much prefer the conical point. I have noticed in my experience that the cutting point tears too big of a hole in the fishes mouth and makes it easier to thrown the hook. The conical point pierces just enough to get past the barb and not much else. I have used Trokars, Both style of Owner hooks, Mustads, etc. and always find myself going back to my trusty Gammies for fresh water Large Mouth Bass fishing. Salt water fishing, that’s a whole different story...

I've not used Trokar, but I have used Owner and

Gamakatsu (and a number of others).

 

Gamakatsu is my number 1 choice, hands down.

 

I use Gammy Wide Gap Finesse and Splitshot/Dropshot

hooks. Both are fantastic for bass fishing.

 

Owner makes a fine hook, no doubt. Just in my personal

experience, I have better hookups with Gammy.

Gamakatsu circle octopus - best hookup rate I have ever experienced for both wacky and drop shot. Used them for many years.  VMC Flippin' Hook is excellent and priced below the other top brands.

I guess I'll be the one to say it... You didn't hook and lose all 11 fish because of the hook. 

 

I happen to like Trokar hooks for a few applications, but i seem to roll the points on them a lot. I'll be looking at the Owners

That's good info about Eagle Claw. I stopped using them maybe 15 years ago because Gamakatsu was so much sharper and superior quality material and my hookup percentage, esp. with a Carolina rig using monofilament, went way up. Then I switched to braid on spinning gear and it went up more. I may give them another shot. Some time back, I purged all my EC hooks out and gave them to a buddy who doesn't fish that much. But I know he catches fish on them.

 

 

My dad, ever the cheap skate where fishing is involved, bought a lifetime supply of Eagle Claw 3/0 offset worm hooks from Wally World and told me to use them up. I said OK, but never touched them.

Last time I was there I couldn't even buy a boat drain plug. I drove 20 miles just for that purpose and they were out. Guess there was a run on drain plugs. I had to jerry-rig my old one because I was fishing next day and I bought one at a store at the lake the next day.

Maybe you got a bad pack? That's pretty unusual especially for open water type application.

Trokar is a high end brand of Eagle Claw hooks. The Trokar started out as a heavy wire flipping hook that worked good to achieve hook penetration with less hook setting force required. The fact Trokar price point cost 10X more than other high quality premium brands limits it's general usage. Broadening the Trokar line up offering worm hooks hasn't worked because of the price, so Eagle Claw has lowered the standard line of worm hook price point to generate more sales.

The light wire wacky hooks from Gamakatsu, Owner, Mustad Ultra, VMC, Daichi and Eagle Claw Needle point, all perform very good, tough market for the Trokar brand to be competitive in at a higher price that offers little or no advantage.

Hooks were from 2 different packages in two different sizes. I agree it's unusual
