Kbral87 Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 So there is this small pond a couple of miles from my house that does nothing but frustrate me. I can see the bass swimming but despite my best attempts I can't seem to get their attention. I have tried everything I can think of crankbaits, lip less crankbaits, buzzbaits, and a variety of soft plastics to no avail. I fish the lures at a variety of techniques and speeds and still nothing. The only think I've been able to use is a white strike king red eye special spinner, even then all I get are dunks. Is there something that I'm overlooking? Any advise is greatly appreciated. Quote

Same thing happened to me earlier this year and then the next time I took my son with me and I rigged that up for him and he out fished me.. He's 2 years old... lol. 1 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted September 19, 2015 Super User Posted September 19, 2015 What kind of line are you using and if you can see them they can see you. Popular belief "here" is that bass cannot possibly be line shy , lure shy... but they can be . Quote
Super User bigbill Posted September 19, 2015 Super User Posted September 19, 2015 Wear darker color clothes. One place I fish is deeper in the woods. I cast as far away from me to the other side as I can. I found that the rebel bug series cranks work. The yellow bumblebees and grasshoppers. If the water is clear it's smaller natural color baits fished faster so the bass can't get a good look at them. Now your catching dinks. Catch the dinks but when the dinks bite slows down upside your bait. The larger bass come in to see what the dinks are feeding on but won't hit the smaller bait. If u upside and nothing happens change bait colors. Use a scent too. 1 Quote

As far as clothing goes most of my clothes are dark shades. Quote

d-camarena Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 The wacky rig seems to make them mad an usually theyll hit it. Here in my area at least 1 Quote
Fisher-O-men Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 Fish for the fish you cannot see. Light line, long casts, dropshot! 2 Quote
Kbral87 Posted September 20, 2015 Author Posted September 20, 2015 I've tried the wacky and it just isn't working there. This pond is just different, I've caught more catfish on topwater than bass, I will deff try the dropshot, thank you all for the help. Quote

poisonokie Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 The wacky rig seems to make them mad an usually theyll hit it. Here in my area at least yup, finesse is best. Try a downsized double fluke rig, a shakey head. Get you some roboworms, flick-shake worms, owner wacky jigheads, owner shakey heads, maybe try out a ned rig. Also boo yah pond magic spinnerbaits and rebel teeny draws should come through. Perhaps a finesse jig or two like the strike king bitsy bug. Light lines and tight lines, brother. Quote
hatrix Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 It's possible it is almost all snall fish as everything they ever eat is even smaller. I would try a UL and if you can't catch some fish on that then really no other lures are going to work. There are plenty of UL baits that are straight up fish magnets. Inline spinners, tiny suspending jerkbaits, I like a size 6 X-Rap. Those little tiny snell rigged creme worms with the prop and beads. Crappie crankbaits, those crappy poppers that come in the round container spitshots come in. Today actually I was fishing a 1/8 oz rat-l-trap I bought earlier this morning and caught all kinds of fish on it. Lots of real big bluegill actually. If a UL can't get you a couple bites nothing will. Quote
speed craw Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 I have had to fish under similar conditions . My advice if you can see them they can see you , wear dark green or camo . Second light finesse tactics , drop shot shakey head etc . Lately weightless texas rigged zoom trick worms worked like a fluke or jerkbait have been working . Third sometimes dropping down on line size can be the ticket , I have had to to 6lb to get bit . Last but not least distance try to be very accurate and long casts sometimes well passed your target as to not spook the fish . Hope this helps in some way , good luck. Quote
jbarnard Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 we have a city lake here in town that is nothing more than a big pond and i have found that when they wont bite my normal presentations ill downsize to a small rapala original floater on med spinning gear and i will work the bait with sharp jerks this will usually get a reaction bite. Super User the reel ess Posted September 20, 2015 Super User Posted September 20, 2015 Realistic looking frog at dusk. Tiny Rebel Crick Hopper and Bumble Bug. Small wacky Senko. Live worm or small panfish under a bobber. I had a place like that I sneaked into when I was a kid. I only caught one fish ever there, but there were big'uns that never would bite. Quote
Super User Senko lover Posted September 21, 2015 Super User Posted September 21, 2015 Didn't look through all the posts (shame on me, I know), but I pull out a trick worm or fluke and fish it weightless when I can see bass but they won't bite. Quote
BucketMouth15 Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 If you can see the bass while fishing they most likely aren't going to bite anything. Maybe wear darker clothes or try morning/evening if the pond is shallow. Quote
BigBites1 Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 I had similar issue here also. I got lucky with pumpkin seed trig with a brass bullet weight. Cast near a water inlet if there is one . Most small ponds are retention areas and have some type of concrete Inlet. Or else try a big fat black and blue flec think they are called 5" power hogs. I've had good luck in trouble areas with them Quote
thirtysixit Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 Downsize your soft plastics and stand as far away from the bank as possible when making your casts. Quote
