Super User Raul Posted September 21, 2015 Super User Posted September 21, 2015 I have a question. I have a shimano crucial. You guys probably know about the horrible hook keeper position. I was pitching into some thick grass and i had a bite. The braid had gotten stuck on the hook keeper so when i set the hook the drag was not able to engage. The rod exploded. Shimano replaced it but it didnt seem like they wanted to replace it. What do you guys think shimano should of done? Replace it or no? Im a small buisness owner myself and i dont like it when customers try to take advantage of me but i honestly feel like it was a manufacturing error How come line stuck on the hook keeper is a "manufacturer error" ? corn-on-the-rob Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 How come line stuck on the hook keeper is a "manufacturer error" ? More or less a design error, which would technically be the manufacturer's fault. I have also noticed on certain brands of rods the keeper i directly below and between the reel and the first guide, at time of slack line the line falls towards the blank and occasionally gets caught around the keeper, mostly a nuisance, but in this guy's case, failure to load properly resulting in fracture. 1 Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted September 22, 2015 Super User Posted September 22, 2015 Sounds more like a design engineering issue than anything. With all of the manufacturers using split grips on most of their models, I don't know why they don't mount the hook keep behind the rear grip. It's out of the way and easily accessible. Quote

Super User A-Jay Posted September 22, 2015 Super User Posted September 22, 2015 Here's one way to break a rod . . . And it's very effective too as I snapped 3 in two days using this technique A-Jay Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted September 22, 2015 Super User Posted September 22, 2015 That makes me cringe AJ. Sounds like it was a rough trip for broken rods. Sorry to hear/see this. Quote

Super User WRB Posted September 22, 2015 Super User Posted September 22, 2015 Proper hook setting technique, 2 piece rods breaking at the ferrule? Tom Quote
grizzly1654 Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 I prefer to have my partner net the fish for me........that way i can blame him if it gets off lol. Quote

And it's very effective too as I snapped 3 in two days using this technique A-Jay Based on the break location and clean break, this rod had likely been compromised in some way: scratch, dent or ding from contact with a cleat, rock, sinker etc. Quote

Three failed the same way in two days. All failed right at or above a ferrule (travel rods) Another failed the year before. Three were mine, one was Jeff's (00 mod). I'm leaning towards the design. I agree, 3 in one trip & 1 earlier in time. A simple hookset, no doubt in my mind that's either a poorly designed rod or a poorly manufactured rod. That would suck on a trip like that.. I had a firing pin break on a rifle in Saskatchewan in about 94, glad I had a backup rifle, sheesh, stuff happens. Quote

Had plenty of tackle - this is where being a spaz & always bringing too much stuff actually paid off. But happening while cranking with 17 pound mono ? I might be able to accept it a bit more if I was Dropping the hammer with 50 lb braid. Either Way, ST Croix took very good care of me (LTB rod upgrades) and I'm a happy camper. Still haven't decided which travel rod to replace them with yet though - I'm a little gun shy. A-Jay Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 I missed that they were travel rods. If you're seeing a pattern then I'd have to agree. Don't be scared away from travel rods altogether though. Done right , they'll do anything a one piece will. Quote
Bass newb Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 Wow. I never knew that was wrong. Glad I haven't broken my rods yet. I'll be more careful from now on. No one ever told me. Quote
