Poppin Frog Vs Walking Frog

Hi i just recently moved to lake Sinclair in Ga and I'm starting use frogs a lot more because the lake has a lot of grass, most of it no more than 8ft from the bank. so I have a couple questions.

1) what percentage do you throw a walking frog vs a Popping frog.

2) when would you throw either one?

for fishing pads, I use scum frogs. Super soft and go through pads great. also only three bucks a pop. they don't walk well though. that's why I use em in pads. ill usually throw a pad crasher in open water. I just got a poppin frog, but am yet to try it out.

I prefer the popper because I can do more different types of movement, anything from a twitch in place to a nice solid spit and pop......The walker is pretty much just a walker and a better open water lure.

When I throw a frog about 90% of the time I'm throwing a walking frog and 10% of the time I'll be throwing a popping one. For me, water clarity and amount of wind decides what I'm going to throw. If I feel the fish need more comotion to find it, I'll throw the popper otherwise I'll be walking one. As blue stated, the Popping Pad Crasher can do either, or with a little practice can do both at the same time.

I've thrown both and caught fish on both within minutes of each other. So I'm not sure if it matters much. I do know that I like throwing popping frogs better. The popping pad crasher walks pretty good so that's almost all I use anymore.

Pad Crasher - I have a from that was given to me.  I didnt know what it was until I saw the same one at Dick's tonight (Im new and inexperienced with frogs).  Ive had zero hits with it in the pads and grass, but Ive had two hits in more open areas (thin small pad area).  Seems maybe this is a better lure for jerking across water.

Spro popping frog 60. It walks, it spits, perfect size, lots of color choices for your water clarity. They are also extremely durable. Great for open water. In the thick stuff I've got a new go to frog with the bully wa 2 but you can never go wrong with a spro bronze eye frog 65 Or the live target 65. I like the bigger frogs in the grass and pads. I feel like it brings more attention in the weeds and also gives you a chance to catch bigger fish which at the end of the day that's all we want a big bass.

I fish the Pad Crasher in very thick slop as well as open areas and get bit both places. Are you fishing it fast across the thick stuff? It takes a little more time for them to find it and attack in thicker cover. I usually fish it pretty slowly so they have time to find it and it works pretty well.

This, and I also shove 1-2 jig rattles in the back squirt hole. Adds a little something so they can key in on it in the slop.

Probably not as slow as I should.  I usually do a *jerk-jerk-jerk-jerk-pause-jerk-jerk-jerk-jerk-jerk* across it.  Basically mimicking a hopping a frog.  I'll try slowing it down.  This time of year where I am it would behoove me learn how to properly retrieve one of these things.

Thats a great idea.  I might just give that a whirl

Don't use poppin frogs anymore.

I have them but I've had excellent results with a Captain Dan Clone frog for a stop and go, or straight retrieve that displaces as much if not more water, depending on how I work it, than poppin one.

For silent walking it's a Scum Frog.

I usually throw a popping frog anymore. They are basically the same as a normal from except you can also pop them so they are kinda better in a way.

I've found a popper to really help call fish in the really dense stuff. Make a lot of noise and fish it slow so fish can home in on it.

Can you walk it like a regular frog? If so, is it easy to walk? I've been looking into the popping frogs but I can't decide if I wan't one..

Imo, they're easier to walk than a regular frog.

Huh, guess I'll be going to BassPro for one of those soon then.  I never bought one before because I was thinking it would be too hard to walk. Also, do you have a favorite brand? The only frog I have now is the booyah pad crasher, and it's a great frog, but I would be willing to pay more to get one that would last longer, catch more bass, etc. if there's one that can out fish it.

The Booyah is my favorite popping frog too.

I started throwing popping frogs last year or maybe the year before and it is pretty much all i use unless the cover dictates a more slender profile.  I have found quite a few i like, spro, terminator, booyah, they are all solid.

You can also stuff 3 or 4 bbs inside of the frog’s body to help make it rattle

If you want a frog to walk cut the legs shorter.
