Finnz922 Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Headed down there this week. What's the smallmouth bite like right now? Quote
RangerDanger Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Check last couple of pages of the kc area report. It's been pretty consistent with some 2lb+ fish showing up. Saturday had two tournaments so they have been pressured. Quote
Super User gardnerjigman Posted September 14, 2015 Super User Posted September 14, 2015 Spook, tube, Ned. All you need. If it's been like the last few trips the spook will do all you need. Don't be afraid to throw it when "you arent supposed to". Quote
Super User skunked_again Posted September 14, 2015 Super User Posted September 14, 2015 I used to love Melvern. Great lake. Quote
Finnz922 Posted September 14, 2015 Author Posted September 14, 2015 Thanks guys. Used to live in Lenexa. Haven't fished it in awhile. One of my favorite lakes. Quote
Chris S Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Thanks guys. Used to live in Lenexa. Haven't fished it in awhile. One of my favorite lakes. No fish in that lake, Hillsdale is the place to be LOL J/K Quote
RangerDanger Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Anyone dropshot for them? A guy I work with claims he does. Not sure I've heard of anyone else doing it. It would be tough to try it when the topwater bite is on. Quote
Super User gardnerjigman Posted September 14, 2015 Super User Posted September 14, 2015 Don't really see the point in drop shoting. Most of the fish have been coming in less than 4' of water. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 15, 2015 Global Moderator Posted September 15, 2015 I've done it a few times. It works like most everything else does out there of you fish it long enough. Trouble is you go through a sinker about every drop. Quote
Finnz922 Posted September 15, 2015 Author Posted September 15, 2015 Just wondering if most of the fish are generally smaller (3lbs or less) with the seemingly common average of 12inchers. I thought maybe the bigger fish were deeper and maybe some of you tried drop shotting for them. Don't get me wrong nothing beats a topwater bite but if a guy is looking for bigger fish.... Quote
Super User gardnerjigman Posted September 15, 2015 Super User Posted September 15, 2015 I think the big ones are right with the smaller fish as well. Just got to fish your way through them. It's like freaking parana's on meat! Cant tell you how many times a big fish blew up a spook, but a 10" fish got hooked up. Or how many times a BIG fish was following a hooked up fish. Quote
Ondrejka Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 That's the main reason I fish a Spook 97% of the time, and follow it up with a 3.5" tube if they're rolling on it and not getting hooks. Big fish baits. Quote
Finnz922 Posted September 15, 2015 Author Posted September 15, 2015 I appreciate all the feedback. will let you guys know if the bite is still on this weekend. Thanks David Quote
RangerDanger Posted September 16, 2015 Posted September 16, 2015 Your getting advice from the 3 guys who fished there frequently in the last month so have fun and watch that wind. Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 16, 2015 Global Moderator Posted September 16, 2015 If you want bigger fish then throw a big shad swimbait. The smallies in Melvern seem scared of deep water. All the smallies 3-5 pounds I've caught out there I bet the deepest was 8' excluding winter months. The biggest was in less than a foot in the middle of the day and the biggest one I've hooked (6+) was also less than 1' deep, also in the middle of a bright, sunny day. 2 Quote
Super User gardnerjigman Posted September 16, 2015 Super User Posted September 16, 2015 Bull shad!!!! Quote
Super User gardnerjigman Posted September 16, 2015 Super User Posted September 16, 2015 you need one! I can't do it! I'd have a stroke or throw my rig in the lake. Too many follows with not enough catching. I'll give them their credit, big fish eat them. Big fish eat spooks too! Lol 1 Quote
Ondrejka Posted September 16, 2015 Posted September 16, 2015 I like a 4.3" Keitech, or any soft swimbait like a Swimming Caffeine Shad rigged with a Gami weighted swimbait hook. But you're right Coty, I can't justify $50 for a Bull Shad when those big girls will eat a Spook all day. Quote
Super User gardnerjigman Posted September 16, 2015 Super User Posted September 16, 2015 If I had a rig to throw it on already, I probably would own one. But since I don't, it's not just a $50 purchase, more like a $250 purchase by the time I get the rig... and I'm married... nuff said.. 2 Quote
