Junebugman Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Hi I tried it and it works great when smallies are deeper my bait of choice are the biggest fatheads I can find or get my indian friend to trap me some 4 to 5" red tail chubs, I use a vmc drop shot rig or a circle hook with appropiate weight, i fish the st croix river above taylors falls. Neil McCauley Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 I never fish live bait, but it's tempting.I expect lots of rock bass and perch though if at the slightly wrong depth. Quote
JeziHogg Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 I use a DS with livebait when fishing for walleye on hardwater. Quote
Super User bowhunter63 Posted September 16, 2015 Super User Posted September 16, 2015 I have never Drop shot with live bait but in the fall on the rivers i fish a big chub on the lifts on a lindy rig. Quote

Mothercanucker Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 yea medium minnows work well. My secret is drop shotting a live nightcrawler, hooked once wacky style. Quote
j2015 Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 This year I took a buddy of mine out smallmouth fishing on lake Michigan, I was telling him how big the smallies are out there, and how we catch them with different artificial lures. He usually fishes for walleye and perch with live bait, and he thought that he would kill them with some live bait. He tried all day and only caught a bunch of small rock bass and baby perch, while I hauled in about 6 or 7 monster smallmouth on plastics. I think I might have converted him that day. I think that the right presentation is key to catching bass, and sometimes they just aren't interested in the real thing Quote
Super User Spankey Posted October 23, 2015 Super User Posted October 23, 2015 Take that there live bait off of there and get a Roboworm or a Manns Dragin worm on there in bluegill, prism shad or sand. Than hold on. Quote
