stkbassn Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 So I'm considering a future purchase of a Calcutta 300D. I've heard or read good and bad. I would expect a lot less bad at that price point. What's your experience with the reel and would you recommend it? I'm going to use it for glide baits and swimbaits. Thanks guys. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted September 14, 2015 Super User Posted September 14, 2015 Member A-Jay is fishing this evening...but he should be along at some point to give you a report on the 300-size Calcutta D. He fishes several of them and has lots of experience with them. 2 Quote
Steven.Rea Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 The 300 is a POWERHOUSE of a reel. I use it for my football jigs, swim jigs, carolina rigs, frogs, small swimbaits, big crankbaits, and more. But, in all honesty, I'd go with the 400D for glidebaits and swimbaits. It holds more line, the handle is longer so you can SLOW ROLL your baits, it casts a mile, and is high quality. I have a 400D for sale if you're interested. I'm looking to upgrade it to a 400TE here soon, that's why I'm parting ways with it. If you're interested, message me and we'll talk! Hope this helped!!! Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted September 14, 2015 Super User Posted September 14, 2015 Goose52 is right as usual. I do fish the Calcutta D's ~ 200's & 300's. Love'em. Do not own the 400D The 300 is used for mid sized swim baits like the Hudd 68's and I also deep crank with it when throwing the Bigger Crank baits. I highly recommend the TW Demo Program. It's a great way to try before you buy. I demo'ed both these reels and then ended up buying them. Good Luck A-Jay 1 Quote
stkbassn Posted September 14, 2015 Author Posted September 14, 2015 Thanks everyone, I appreciate the input! Quote
Klebs01 Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 I use the 300D for swim baits any where 1 oz to 4oz and it works great. 1 Quote
John G Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Stu, Japan Lure Shop has the new Conquest 300 for around $12 more than Tackle Warehouse's price on the Calcutta 300D and you could probably find the old model CNQ300 for less than that. 1 Quote
Solution stkbassn Posted September 16, 2015 Author Solution Posted September 16, 2015 Sportsman's had the 300 Calcutta D clearanced out at 259 ,last one.. holding it for me until payday! Stoked. Thanks for all of the input as always folks. 1 Quote
Poolshark Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 I own a couple of 200ds and I absolutely love them for almost any technique. There is no break access, but I set mine on two breaks and I've never needed to adjust them. They cast well and are very powerful for their size. I like the silver color and the minimalist design. They are very easy to break down and clean as well. Some people have criticized them for the break access, but I've never cared. Good reels. Quote
Lexy123 Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 If U can get a hold of the older TE GT version, it will blow the D version away by miles. I even prefer B version over D version (think of Curado E vs Curado I). Quote
Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted October 6, 2015 Super User Posted October 6, 2015 That's an awfully awkward reel to use for glide baits , I would think you'd want to go with a low profile baitcaster , I totally understand that a lot of people like their round soup can style reels , but with line on that thing it would weigh over 12 oz.!! I currently use a Revo Toro 51 but am gonna get a Lew's BB2 Pro from the factory and they will put in what ever gear ratio I want for $20 extra, I'm going with the 5.1:1 , the reel holds 14/190 and the reel weighs 6.8 oz. With out line ... Quote
stkbassn Posted October 8, 2015 Author Posted October 8, 2015 There is a Calcutta D in the flea market. Thanks for looking out Dave. I picked one up a couple of weeks ago. Still trying to get it dialed in. I think it's ready for the trip tomorrow but we shall see. It's tricky to get it set up right but I will keep working at it. So far I love the profile , the handle, and the appearance. It's smooth and powerful from what I can tell with practice casting. Looking forward to getting it out on the water. Quote
