nnbjkjk Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 Looking for some recommendations on a 6' ultralight for bouncing little jigs trout and panfish. Going to pair the rod with a Sedona 500 and 4lb fire line. I've fished 4'6" -5' UL st croixs for years but am just looking for other options as I've Never fished an ultralight longer than 5' Quote
Super User tomustang Posted September 13, 2015 Super User Posted September 13, 2015 6' ultralight Croix with a fast action. You were already in the ballpark Quote

blckshirt98 Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 Phenix Elixir - best trout rod out there! Quote
papajoe222 Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 BPS MicroLite. I've had mine for a while now and although the Berkly Cherrywood I had previously isn't a fair comparison, it's a great trout and crappie rod. I'm talking the IM6 version that's only available at the store. Quote
hatrix Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 I know Fenwick makes some UL rods in the eagle series. They have a 5'6" that my brother has and They have a 7' I have been looking at. I know they are not 6' but they are fairly inexpensive and pretty good rods. Quote
nnbjkjk Posted September 14, 2015 Author Posted September 14, 2015 Phoenix elixr looks nice online wish someone had them around here...not looking for my best bang for the buck rod looking for quality and comfort Quote
BaitMonkey1984 Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 6' ultralight Croix with a fast action. You were already in the ballpark Exactly. I initially bought this rod for a salmon/trout trolling rod. I only fish for those species a few times a year. I decided to try it out with a small jig head and grub or the small gulp minnows. Works great for those finesse applications Quote
I.rar Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Previous generation Daiwa procyon would be my choice if on a budget. Around $50 on fleabay. Quote
Super User MickD Posted September 14, 2015 Super User Posted September 14, 2015 Go long unless stream conditions make that impractical. Once you have used a 7 to 7 1/2 foot ultralight, you don't know how pleasant and effective it can be. Ease of casting, ability to cast light lures a long way, better hook sets. If you're buying, it will be difficult, I think, but there are some really nice blanks available for this. Also, the fastest 3 wt fly blank will build into a nice rod. A little slow, but still a lot better than the short ones. The spin blank REVS72UL-SB, Rainshadow Revelation 7 ' 2" blank is excellent for an ultralight spin. Faster than fly blanks. 1 Quote

I currently use a 6'6" UL. It is the longest one I have ever owned an it's great. I don't ubderstand why you would pick a short rod to begin with. Unless for some reasob you casting area is very linited and it was impossible to use a longer rod. 1 Quote
nnbjkjk Posted September 15, 2015 Author Posted September 15, 2015 Would you guys still throw a 500-750 size shimano on the longer rod or step up to a 1000? Quote
Super User tomustang Posted September 15, 2015 Super User Posted September 15, 2015 Would you guys still throw a 500-750 size shimano on the longer rod or step up to a 1000? I don't throw less than 1000 size. It's not all about the spool size, the gear ratio and drag are usually increased when going to a bigger size Quote
Super User WRB Posted September 15, 2015 Super User Posted September 15, 2015 With a 7' rod the 1000 series reel has better balance, the smaller lighter weight reel balance better with the 6' rod. I use the Shimano Stratic 1000 with 3 and 4 lb FC all the time, the drag breaks away without any issues. The St Croix Avid series makes a AVS70UL ultra lite rod that should work for you. I have a older Model 7' 1 piece light rated for 2 to 6 lb line that I use. Tom Quote
