RyanFishing Posted September 12, 2015 Posted September 12, 2015 Most Topwater baits don't come with split rings but I was wondering if anyone puts split rings on them? I mainly use spook type and popper topwater baits and was wondering if the split ring had any benefit to them? Thanks! Quote
Super User Raul Posted September 12, 2015 Super User Posted September 12, 2015 Walk the dog baits won´t walk properly if you add a split ring, with other baits like prop and pop baits there´s usually no problem at all. 2 Quote
Super User bigbill Posted September 12, 2015 Super User Posted September 12, 2015 I add split rings to poppers. I can't get the ball bearing locking snap swivel on the eye on the popper without a split ring. Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted September 12, 2015 Super User Posted September 12, 2015 Walk the dog baits won´t walk properly if you add a split ring, I guess I need to re-learn what PROPERLY is, as my walking baits work to my satisfaction with small split rings attached. oe 3 Quote
Super User bigbill Posted September 12, 2015 Super User Posted September 12, 2015 The added split ring and ball bearing locking snap swivel acts as a hinge. It's a much smoother action. Quote
badhatharry Posted September 12, 2015 Posted September 12, 2015 I use a snap directly to the eye on all my topwaters and cranks. Quote
RyanFishing Posted September 12, 2015 Author Posted September 12, 2015 Awesome! Thanks everyone for the information! Quote
Super User WRB Posted September 12, 2015 Super User Posted September 12, 2015 A popper style top water like a Pop-R is designed to sit tail downward, front end upward. Any weight added to the front end will affect the action. Dog walking lures also sit tail downwards front upwards, adding weight also affects how the lure walks. I tie direct to top water lures weighing less than 3/4 oz without adding clips or split rings to the line tie eye. Tom 2 Quote
NotnatsSamoht Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 I put split rings on all of my top water baits. Hasn't affected them enough to make me change it. Quote
Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted September 13, 2015 Super User Posted September 13, 2015 all baits react differently to split rings . some they help , some they don't , some doesn't change the action at all ..... expiriment with them on the baits you use to see first hand .... Quote

detroit1 Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 I don't use a split ring for the line-tie, but I do add one to the back hook's split ring to get that feathered treble to hang down a little lower. Does it help? I don't know... Quote
Super User bigbill Posted September 16, 2015 Super User Posted September 16, 2015 I don't think the extra weight up front matters when I pause it after my famous one, two, three, twitch then pause. (Famous lol) Quote
