SDbassin Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 hey all, Im going on a trip to the Sierra's this weekend, going to do some fishing which I haven't done in a while and unfortunatly do not have a trout rod at the moment, mine broke a few months ago and just havent replaced it yet. I have my St. Croix Avid X 7' M/F spinning rod that I will be bring with me, my question is, will that be too much rod for trout, and what can I do to make the set-up acceptable for the couple days I will be fishing, maybe using mono to help with some of the shock? Super User DogBone_384 Posted September 11, 2015 Super User Posted September 11, 2015 I've accidentally caught rainbow trout while fishing for bass...If you have a ML or L spinning rod I'd bet you can toss trout lures just fine. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 11, 2015 Global Moderator Posted September 11, 2015 If you have a drop shot rod that is what I use for trout each winter. 1 Quote
Fisher-O-men Posted September 12, 2015 Posted September 12, 2015 The problem would be the length of the rod. If you will be stream fishing, you will be dealing with a lot of brush. A rod under 5' is ideal. Get a cheapy rig at Walmart. 1 Quote
Rob96 Posted September 12, 2015 Posted September 12, 2015 If you have a Dick's nearby, go and buy the Shakespeare Agility UL combo. Nice outfit for under $40. I have actually caught more Bass than Trout on it. But then I caught my PB Trout (26", 6.5#, Brown) on my Bass rod. 1 Quote
SDbassin Posted September 12, 2015 Author Posted September 12, 2015 I ended up going to walmart to get some hooks, and walked out with a $16 shakespeare, and put my lews tournament pro on it, should be perfect. Thanks for the info guys Quote
fish stick Posted September 12, 2015 Posted September 12, 2015 I go fishing with my buddy who trout fish with his bass rod. From what I notice he is weary to set the hook hard because he had a medium 6 ft rod. , plus braid. It's too strong for such small game fish.I prefer ultra lite. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 13, 2015 Global Moderator Posted September 13, 2015 The trout I'm fishing for aren't the "ultralight with 2lb test" type trout. That's going to influence your decision as well. Quote
Dillo Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 I cant imagine having any fun playing those sierra fish on a bass rod. Most trout up there are pretty small, more suited to a very light rod. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted October 2, 2015 Super User Posted October 2, 2015 I have a LEWS med/lt action rod that would love to hang one of those on it. But I like trout on UL rods with 4lb test stream fishing. When we used salmon and cheese eggs we couldn't feel the nibble on the heavier rods. Quote
