Good Sites For Custom Rods?

anyone know of any sites where you can "build" a rod and actually see how it comes out...anything like that exist?

by dealing with a reputable rod builder and this day and age of email, text and sending pictures in text , i'm sure if you asked , the builder can keep you updated with progress pictures if they are so inclined .

when you want a custom rod built ,you should research eveything and all components and you your self visualize how you want the rod , then precisely communicate that to the builder . if you know everything you want on your rod , seems you should know how it would come out ...

I've thought about having such a tool on my website but not only is it expensive I don't like the impersonal aspect. Seems contrary to the whole custom build experience. Seldom does a build end up being exactly what the client and I first discuss.

Exactly. There's more to a custom rod than picking parts and colors.

It does seem in this day and age of electronic communications, people want to remove the human aspect of everything. Click a few buttons, place an order and have it show up in a few weeks. That kind of thing is not for me.

i guess i take the artistry out of rods i have built for me , i order all components and blank and know exactly how i want it done , so i don't give the rod builder no creativity . just want it how i want it , that for me is a full custom (of MY design) ....

 

i guess i'm not the optimal client

Not everyone has the ability or inclination to do what you do with your own design. It's not about the optimal client it's about striving to be an optimum builder. Consultation beyond "what color do you want?" Is part of what we offer should anyone care to take advantage.

Though I've never owned one, Kilter Rods will let you build Your own custom Z-Bone on their site.

 

It's pretty $$ pricey.

Got a call, from a guy I dont know, a couple of weeks ago. I keep hoping one of my buds put somebody up to this just to yank my crank, and that he'll call and fess up, so we can have a chuckle about it. I'm still waiting for that call.

Anyway, this wingnut tells me wants a Loomis NRX rod, 7'6" heavy, extra fast, with an 18" full cork handle, foodge guides, (not Fuji, foodge); it has to be under 4 ounces, and he needs me to deliver it to him personally in four days, because he has an "important" tournament, and can't wait for it to be shipped. He called on a Saturday afternoon, and wanted it Wednesday, so he could pre-fish with his new rod.

He got down right abusive when I tried to tell him what was impossible about his request. Being a guy who likes to return a compliment after receiving one, the conversation went rapidly downhill.

I hope I don't run into too many more of this type of fool.

Well, he had a buddy, who had a friend, who had a brother, who could buy those any time he wanted, and if I were any kind of reputable builder, I should be able to get him what he wanted. That's not an exact quote. I'm quite certain his command of the language did not include the term reputable.
