Ski213 Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 It's going to take a lot of hard work. I mean more than you can possibly imagine. Learn everything you can from every possible source. Some things you learn will work and other things will not. You have to put in the time both on the "classroom" and on the water. Sponsors generally don't sponsor as a donation, they expect a return on their investment. The way you become a good investment is to be very good at whatever you're doing. You do that by putting in the time it takes to be very good. When it's miserable outside and no one is fishing you need to be out there. To be really good takes a lot of time and dedication. You said you're relatively new at this. Just spend time learning the basics and practicing them. Enjoy the act of fishing. If you end up loving it and still want to pursue your dreams then go for it. When you approach a potential sponsor you need some kind of resume. They don't want to hear what you want them to do for you they want to hear what you can do for them. That's just business. 2 Quote
Dave Jakes Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 Being good helps. Winning tournaments really helps. But more than that, it's about your ability to be seen. Just being good alone won't draw sponsors, you have to be noticeable by the people of your sport. A great way to do that is through social media and making connections within you local fishing community. The more people who see you in pictures holding big bass along with a company's product in hand, the more valuable you look to a business. As a sponsored angler, you are essentially a salesman. If what you do doesn't lead people to buy someone's gear, you don't have any value to that company. Start with local companies. The bass club you are in probably has local sponsors that support the club events and tournaments. Talk to the people that run those businesses, get to know them, take them fishing, post about how great their stuff is on Twitter, Facebook, ect... Win a few tournaments on a local level while talking up a local company's baits on a local social media platform. That's going to get you (and that company) noticed. 1 Quote

Looking for the big one Posted November 29, 2015 Posted November 29, 2015 I would suggest you start a youtube channel. Once you get enough subscribers it is pretty easy to convince those companies that they would get money back from sponsoring you. The hardest part is actually getting the sponsorship, once you have a sponsor all you have to do is use their gear, wear their hat, put some stickers on you're boat, and watch as they give you free stuff. I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you on this one. Once you have a sponsor... you basically have a job and your job is to A) Make said company money by promoting and being a walking/talking commercial for their products and Represent said company in a professional manor to appeal to the masses. Don't do your job... and watch how fast they bring you back to reality. 2 Quote

Speaking from first hand experience in the matter, I would say this is the attitude not to take. Quote
