JETSWU87 Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 Just purchased some items to rig up the ned rig. 1/10 and 1/8 jig heads and trds. I have two spinning setups I can use for this setup. Pfluger president combo with 30 sized reel rod is 6'6 light power, unknown action. 4-8lb line BPS Carbon light medium power fast action 6'6 with same reel, also have a 35 series president around. I'm leaning towards the light combo as I've caught a lot of fish with it but with moving baits like small cranks...keeps them buttoned well. Not sure how this rod would be detecting bites on slow or stationary baits. I haven't fished the carbon light much as I bought right before I made the switch to casting gear. I've heard these rods are stiffer then the ratings displayed, wonder if it's too much for 6lb line and light hooks. I'm also planning on spooling the setup with trilene XL 6lb as its just sitting around. Thanks in advanced for your opinions! Quote
poisonokie Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 I'd use the light if it has any backbone. 1 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 One of the traits of the Ned Rig is the Do Nothing / Feel Nothing aspect. You'll know when you get bit and the small light wire jig hooks don't require a fierce hook-set. As for landing fish, we land steelhead on light powered rods and no bass is any match for one of them. I'd for sure go with the light or ML rod that loads and casts well with the light weight. 5 Quote
MO_LMB Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 I'll second what DVT says... Part of the effectiveness of the ned rig is a slack line no feel approach. With the Medium power or a higher modulus graphite rod, you might feel the bait too much and probably move the bait too much for ideal effectiveness. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 12, 2015 Global Moderator Posted September 12, 2015 Something in between the two rods you have will be best. Of the two options you listed, I'd put light braid on the light action rod. 1 Quote
JETSWU87 Posted September 13, 2015 Author Posted September 13, 2015 Thanks for the replies, I've rigged up the light action and kept the 10lb braid on it and tied on a leader. I don't like fishing slow so I may leave everything else at home. Quote
Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted September 13, 2015 Super User Posted September 13, 2015 Thanks for the replies, I've rigged up the light action and kept the 10lb braid on it and tied on a leader. I don't like fishing slow so I may leave everything else at home. that's the best way to learn and focus on a certain bait . i do that once a month regardless to get in tune with a bait i'm not throwing much and i know it will produce .
