Bass Pro Shops Flourocarbon/mono Line/is It Any Good?

I am looking for a more economical version of flourocarbon/monofilament and was wanting to know experiences of people using BPS lines. I have read BPS reviews and some help but not detailed. I know fishing line brands are very opinion based, just wanted to get peoples "facts". Thanks!

I tried it but didn't like it. It wasn't any better than Red Label or Super in my opinion but it was more expensive.

The most economical is buy some nice braid. Put on a fluorocarbon leader.

I prefer Red Label over the XPS flouro, RL is a good bit cheaper too...But even if they were the same price I'd still pick RL, I think it's the best of the budget flouro lines.  

 

Best way to save money on line is to buy it all at once during a TW sale.  I usually buy all my line  for the year during one of the early season TW sales.  TW is cheaper than most other places anyway, plus the 15% discount for the sale and free shipping .

I recently bought some 8lb. BPS Copoly to use as a leader for my spinning rigs. My impression of it is... brittle. I get more breakoffs than I should with a mono line.

Red Label & line conditioner 1 time & good to go!! For 12 & 15lb atleast.

Their mono is good, been using the BPS Excel for years. Not sure about the fluorocarbon though.

You know, I really liked the fluoro they had that came it the white box. It was inexpensive and had very low memory. It was kinda stretchy, but I used it on an xf rod for skipping, so it worked great. They quit making it, though.

I included BPS fluorocarbon in a line test I did last Spring.  Out of 9 fluorocarbon lines tested, it was 4th in terms of overall stretch.  Of the 9 FC lines tested, five of them including BPS, also snapped at the maximum line rating of 8 lb test.  I would rate it in the middle to bottom third of the lines tested.  I personally think you can do better for approximately the same price.  Based upon the results of the tests, my fluorocarbon choice would be Sniper, co-polymer would be Yo-Zuri Hybrid and mono would be Trilene XT.

I've only used the BPS flouro once about 5 years ago so I can't rate it. However, I've used BPS Excel nylon mono a bunch (in 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, and 17lb) and have had no problems with it. A good line, and a good value, especially in the bulk spools.

Thanks for the replies. I love TackleWarehose I buy 90% of my gear from there. I like the idea of using braid with a flouro leader, I have used this technique numerous times. The lake I fish is very clear and the fish are pressured a LOT. Flouro is just about my only option. I have waisted money on red label...i have found it to be very stiff and not so abrasive resistant. That's why i'm looking for replacement line. I love P-line but it's pricey.

Bps xps florocarbon is made for bps by Seagar.

It's not bad ... I still prefer sunline.

I did not like the 17lb mono that came on my rod combo. I was much happier with a different type of line altogether.

I have sniper on all my set ups. I tried red label once and found that i had many unexplained break offs. Then i notices i had a bad spool. Every 5 feet or so it had small nicks. I never tried red label again. Last week i bought a 10lb spool of sniper and its also bad. Frustrating

I use Seaguar InvisX.  Okay, it is expensive at about twenty bucks for a 200 yard spool.  Make that sixteen if you get it on sale at 20% off, which TW does three or four times per year

 

Sure, I could put the whole two hundred yards of six pound test on a Shimano Saros 2500, but I don't.  I put on some cheap backing, enough to leave room for a hundred yards of InvisX.  A hundred yards is more than adequate.  So, I get two reels spooled with InvisX for eight bucks per spool.  In fact, it's even less than that because when I need line, I buy the thousand yard spool of InvisX when it goes on sale for about sixty bucks.  That means I spend six bucks per reel for a quality line.  That will last me until I refill the reel for the next season.

 

Even if you had to load your reel twice during the season, it will cost you sixteen dollars.  That's not a lot of money for a season's worth of fishing.  You can get some econo fluorocarbon and save yourself maybe eight bucks over the season.  But, you may have to put up with stiffness, more difficult knot tying, and casting noise as the straw goes through the guides, even with a generous dosing of line conditioner.

 

Speaking of conditioner, I don't need it with the InvisX.  How much is a bottle of line conditioner?  How much will you use in the course of the season.  I don't know, but it wouldn't surprise me if cheap line plus conditioner will cost more over for the season than a quality line which doesn't need it.

I use to use a lot of XPS FC when it was cheaper. I thought it was good line but now that it has KVD's name on it it's about the same price as Sunline Sniper so I switched to Sunline.

I've had some really bad experiences when trying to bargain hunt on fluorocarbon lines. Lots of breakages and annoyances. I have half a Rubbermaid bin full of half-full spools of junk line where i was trying to experiment or save a buck.

 

Keep in mind that some of the high-end flouro lines can be fished for more than one season. Sometimes more than two. I've even reversed them on the reel and then stretched them by tying them to a post and stretching the last 50 yards. We've all seen how these lines tend to behave better after being stretched by a fish or two.

 

There are lots of things that one can skimp on; I do it all the time. Fluoro line is just not knot one of them, pun intended.

I used BPS fluoro in the white box for years with zero problems, not because I thought it was the greatest fluoro but because it worked fine for me and I could stock up on it during their 50% off spring sales.  Otherwise, I'd buy Seguar or Sunline fluoro whenever I see them on sale.  As far as the BPS mono, I think it has a huge amount of stretch so I prefer a different brand (Izor Platinum, Yozuri Hybrid, Trilene XT, McCoy's are all fine on baitcasters).

Been using BPS Flouro for 10 years now on the Potomac in 10, 12 and 14lb and love it.  I buy each year on the big sale when they mark it down.

The first issue of XPS Flurorcarbon was made by Toray, then they changed mfg or formula and it was terrible--broke easily. They actually removed it from their displays. Both were in the white box.

I have a couple spools of the terrible stuff that I marked DEFFECTIVE

 

The current version in the yellow box is good line. I have used all three versions, still have some of the first issue Toray made.

 

Bass Pro buys stuff that costs the less due to high volume purchases. Whatever company gives them the best deal so they can make the most profit on their brand name is what they carry.
