Dan_the_fisher Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 Has anyone used the phenix m1 8' heavy swimbait rod? How are your experiences with phenix as a company? I'm looking for a somewhat of a budget sqimbait rod for my 6-8" treble hook swimbaits. Like triple trouts, BBz-1 and jr, slammers, and glide baits Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted September 8, 2015 Super User Posted September 8, 2015 I have the heavy and the MH. Buy it, you won't be disappointed. Quote
Dan_the_fisher Posted September 8, 2015 Author Posted September 8, 2015 Thanks, so do you think the heavy better fits my needs? I think it will be more versatile Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted September 8, 2015 Super User Posted September 8, 2015 I'd get the H. It's also a great rod to throw the flash mob with. Quote
Dan_the_fisher Posted September 8, 2015 Author Posted September 8, 2015 Ok I have a heavy, maxima 20#, and a Cardiff 400a with Abec7 kit on the way as a starter swimbait system. I'm pumped 1 Quote
Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted September 8, 2015 Super User Posted September 8, 2015 Phenix make great rods and their customer service is phenominal ..... sounds like you already have the rod on the way , should work good but a fast action is best for glider baits , should have went with the Ultra Swimbait rod USB-800 a 8' heavy powered /fast action , much easier to work glide baits and jointed baits with the fast action , your bait will be a lot more responsive to twitches and pulls . I think the M1 is a heavy enough rod to work the bait unless your using something bigger than a 250 but still has the moderate action you'd want for trebles. Quote

Fishing swimbaits, I never want a moderate action. As far as treble hooks, they are same as any other hooks, reel them as quick as possible , get them to the surface and surf the fish in . With a moderate action, people want to play the fish, wrong ! That's how you lose fish .... Quote
Super User WRB Posted September 8, 2015 Super User Posted September 8, 2015 Dan, you should be happy, got a rod & reel combo for the price of upgrade Phenix rod, which is a inshore rod converted to a swimbait rod. Phenix was a high end west coast rod maker until they went out of business and a Florida company picked up the name. My suggestion is watch Butch Brown vedio's working swimbaits.....slowly. Butch is a expert big bass angler and the key to putting big bass in the boat is control, keeping the bass in front of you and keeping enough line pressure to prevent the lure to be tossed with a head shake and staying focused. No reason to rush and force a big bass into the boat, you are not fishing heavy cover with swimbaits. Good luck. Tom Quote
fisherrw Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 I have a phenix 7'7 ml inshore ocean rod that I love!!! At 169 it's a sick deal for a great rod. Ps, just broke mine actually my fault completely:( sent it in Didn't pay a nickel and had a new rod within a week!! Just 20 for shipping... Quote
Dan_the_fisher Posted September 9, 2015 Author Posted September 9, 2015 I bought a Cardiff mainly because I had a $100 bps card to blow lol, and I just wanted a inexpensive starter setup. Quote
Dan_the_fisher Posted September 9, 2015 Author Posted September 9, 2015 Also the fast taper was the main reason I didn't want the upgraded phenix rod Quote

Tom letting a big fish shake it's head is how they tear the hook out from there mouth which leads to a lot of thrown baits , by reeling it in quickly the bass can't shake their head at all .. Quote
einscodek Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 I have the 8' Phenix M1 Swimbait H and was going to get their top of the line swimbait rod which looked lke a pretty pool cue but backed off and never looked back cause the M1 is more than enough for me. Definitely go H for the 8" swimbaits.. I dont think the H is really that heavy.. its more somewhere between a MH and a H Super light super strong And yes Phenix has excellent customer service.. but take care of the rod cause if you damage it you pay the shipping back and forth which can cost alot of money. I'm also in the camp of horsing the bigger bass in AS FAST AS POSSIBLE.. theres no playin with these boys.. they easily use the heavy swimbaits to toss it at any opportunity.. lost enough big fish giving them too much time to shake those huge heads 1 Quote
Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted September 9, 2015 Super User Posted September 9, 2015 a bass doesn;t need slack in the line to throw a bait . if they are allowed to shake their head even with pressure from a tight line , by shaking their head they cause more damage to the hook hole , enlongating it , making it a LOT easier to throw the bait .. Super User WRB Posted September 9, 2015 Super User Posted September 9, 2015 Big bass is a relative term, in SoCal where we both fish, big is over 8 lbs, giant is over 15 lbs, this size bass is very fast swimmer, much faster than anyone can reel, you can't prevent head shakes or ski it across the surface, if it decides to come at all. The OP is happy with his rod & reel choice and should enjoy it. Let's hope the OP gets the chance to catch big bass, it's all good learning experience. Peace. Tom Quote
Dan_the_fisher Posted September 9, 2015 Author Posted September 9, 2015 Thanks wrb!!!!! All my big bass 7-8lbers, have come off of small baits with smaller line lol. So this will be a powerhouse setup to me, it's all a learning experience now because I have only caught a few swimbait fish but it sure is addicting Quote
Dan_the_fisher Posted September 15, 2015 Author Posted September 15, 2015 Update: still waiting on reel to arrive, but I put my lews bb2 on it, love that combo so far may just stick with it. First outing I caught a 3lb 7oz on it. Not a giant like I was hoping for but still it's a start at building confidence in big baits Quote

I stopped by Turner’s outdoorsman, but they don’t carry the 8 or 9’ sizes. They had all the other sizes, I noticed the guides are small. Do you think the leader knot (FG Knot) would hang up on the guides? Quote
