microotter Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 I read a few people say that this is a terrible frogging rod, but I was wondering if it would make a good swimbait rod for baits 2 ounces and under? Quote
Brian Brazier Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 I use my Frog n Slop as an all around heavy bait rod, I like it for my Spro LJ DD. Give nit a try, I am thinking about picking up a BBZ-1 Rat and using the MB F&S, the designer recommemds a TFO 7'3" H rod that is rated to 1 1/2oz lures, and I would rather use a rod I have then buying a MB Swimbait rod for one bait. Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 8, 2015 Global Moderator Posted September 8, 2015 It does okay but I wouldn't buy one just for that, at least not the older 7' H version. Haven't held the new one, it may be a little better with the extra length. Quote
hatrix Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 If it's a rod you don't own and planned to buy I would look elsewhere myself. I have yet to like a mojo anything I have used and there are better options. Quote
microotter Posted September 9, 2015 Author Posted September 9, 2015 Crap. I ordered this rod at the sale price on the advice of a friend. Oh well Maybe it will be ok as an intro swimbait rod. For $89 with a hat and free shipping it isnt that big of a deal. I also ordered a tatula reel to pair with it. Quote
hatrix Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 The tatula is good. Even a standard tatula the non HD version is a tank of a reel and can throw some lighter swimbaits. I have used them plenty of times to throw baits in the 3 oz range and they work just fine. 1 Quote

That's good to know! I am excited to give it a try. I have heard good things and couldn't pass a new one up for $90. Quote
microotter Posted September 10, 2015 Author Posted September 10, 2015 I have a newbie question... I plan on spooling 50 lb braid on this reel. If I use backing does it matter what diameter the mono is that I use? I don't have any heavy mono laying around. I never backed a reel before but it makes sense with how much money some brands of braid cost. Quote
Dan_the_fisher Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 I don't think it matters really, I always use leftover line on spools. I always use 14-20 lb test though Quote
hatrix Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 The backing size doesnt matter. It can though if you end up feeling the knot on a long cast. I use a little piece of tape instead. I am not casting past my knot and nothing is gonna take my drag that far either. it can also be a bummer if your using heavy line and the knot makes the reel stack to one side. Quote
microotter Posted September 12, 2015 Author Posted September 12, 2015 This rod is beastly, but has a nice finish and I love the color. I was expecting it to not fish very well after a lot of the negative things that I read. I liked it more than I expected though. It is kind of heavy and kind of tip heavy. Even when paired up with the tatula. It is stiff but I could cast heavy baits really accurately, and could even throw a hollow body frog further than I expected. I am satified with the rod at $89. The reel is also very cool looking. It is not as low profile or as light as a lot of reels, but fit my hands well. I was really surprised with how smooth the reel was. It may be the most smooth reel that I own. I also like the knobs a lot more than my Lexa. I ended up spooling 50lb power pro with no backing. I hope you are glad that I reviewed two products that nobody else online has really reviewed. Quote
