Super User Montanaro Posted September 7, 2015 Super User Posted September 7, 2015 I'm looking into getting a drysuit for fishing this winter from my kayak. The mild winter we had last year had me fishing into January and I'd like to go out on the water this time around. I've heard risk of hypothermia increases significantly when water and air temp do not reach a combined 120 which is not far off and I plan to be on water in October. Anyone know of a cheap useful fishing drysuit? I'd like to stay under 500 and much lower if possible. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted September 7, 2015 Super User Posted September 7, 2015 A Dry Suit really is the way to go when the water & air temps start to dip. Clearly a serious investment but the piece of mind for you & your loved ones is IMO worth ever penny. Going without it is always going to be a roll of the dice. However, this might not be the best product to "Bargin Hunt" for. The extra few dollars could make all the difference. While in the USCG we used Kokatat ~ solid product. Whatever you decide, the "Relief Zipper" is must. A-Jay 1 Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted September 7, 2015 Super User Posted September 7, 2015 I concur with A Jay on this one. If you are going the dry suit route you don't want to skimp as it is an investment that will last you for pretty much as long as you take care of it. I equate it to buying a helmet for my road bike. it could be the difference between a major injury or just an inconvenience.... 1 Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Are you talking about a scuba drysuit? I've always joked about taking mine trout fishing in the winter. Quote

A lot of kayak guys use dry suits for paddling not necessarily scuba. I am not sure if they would work for that or not but they are cut differently to allow more freedom of movement. I would guess they couldn't handle the same amount of pressure before leaking that a scuba version would. Quote
Super User Montanaro Posted September 7, 2015 Author Super User Posted September 7, 2015 I saw a couple kokakat for around 500 with relief zipper. Certainly in my shortlist. It may may be something I wait for next year or ask for xmas. I may buy a couple space blankets and change of clothes in my dry storage in the meantime. Quote

I also minimize chances for issues by choosing the safest areas to fish during that type of weather. Quote
Silas Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 I just use my waterproof motorcycle gear. My Klim Latitude jacket and Rukka pants do a fantastic job. Or I have some Goretex Liners for other jackets and pants that can be worn stand alone if it's not really cold. Sweet to have gear that can cross sports!! Don't have to buy new stuff. I feel my high quality motorcycle gear is far better than stuff designed for fishing. I just take the armor out. Quote

Judging by your profile location though, i doubt it gets cold enough to worry as much as those up north have to so you are probably fine. 1 Quote
