I have been updating everyone on here throughout my teaching journey from debating on going back to school, to deciding to get my masters, to student teaching all the way to getting my own class.  I have a 4th grade class that starts on Monday in pretty much the toughest school in the surrounding area as the kids are all from urban housing developments.  The teachers there are awesome but I wish i could say the same for the school.  After a lot of cleaning, trashing stuff from years of people not throwing anything out and organizing things I am just about ready for the kids to come next Tuesday.  Anyways, here are some pics of my classroom from start to finish.

Not omitted, i need to get one fro the supply room as we do the pledge every morning.  It was also interesting that in our very first staff meeting, they started off the day with prayer.  People, think religion and patriotism is being taken out of schools but i can tell you that in the three different school systems i have been a part of over the last 2 years, none of them were removing anything like that.  This school even says Christmas lol  Makes me happy....

Looks great..I do hope you find a way to keep your enthusiasm for the long term.

Me too.  I know it is a tough school and i know there will be days that i need to hit the liquor store on the way home but being positive in the face of adversity has always been a strong suit of mine.  I mean i am an eagles fan for pete's sake.......i have had a lot of practice lol

I think some of the teachers at this school have the order reversed though.....

Looks good ff! Your enthusiasm and passion will impact the kids in a very positive way. Most of us are lucky to have a teacher or two along the way that make a real difference. You can be that guy. I'm looking forward to hearing about your continued success!

My wife teaches and loves it but a friend of mine that teaches in Egypt has one of the coolest DYI rooms I have ever seen.

Wow, that class looks great!!  Looks like a ton of kids though, my class right now is at 27 but it always changes given the transient nature of the population of the school.   If i had ceiling tiles, I would totally do what they did in there.

American Flag is already in place...as far as any type of inspection goes, it would fail miserably but comparatively speaking it is probably the cleanest room in the school.  I personally kept the clorox wipe division in business the past two weeks....and yes the Eagles still suck but hopefully they can change that this season lol

So i am about to finish my first week tomorrow and it has been more difficult than i anticipated and that is after thinking it would be pretty hard.  First off I have a huge class of 29 (1 below the maximum), 2nd these kids pretty much were allowed to do whatever they wanted last year and 3rd they are just not used to structure and following routine.

I have yet to teach an actual lesson, but that was the plan and expected given the nature of the population.  It is almost expected that you work solely on structure, rules, procedures etc...the first few weeks while sprinkling in the academics while they work on how to be a student.  Simple things like walking in the hallways is a complicated task for these kids.  Yesterday we spent an hour walking in the hallways until everyone in the class got it right, stay on the third tile from the wall, face front, and be quiet.  Towards the end of our hour long session, there were only about two kids who were having issues so rather than work with them individually i made the call to have everyone keep working to show that we are a team and only as good as the weakest person.  They got it eventually though.  I do have a a few kids with serious impulse control and will snap if something doesn't go their way.  One in particular just gets up and leaves the class or does whatever he can to disturb everyone else as much as possible.  He has already been to the office 3-4 times in his first three days....

All that being said, when we lined up for an assembly this morning the kids were perfect!!  they lined up, were quiet and did exactly what they were supposed to with minimal direction from me.  I was so proud of them and told them as much.  It was short lived because after lunch it went back downhill and while that isn't acceptable, they know what to do so the potential is there.

I am gonna keep trying and keep working hard to get them to want to learn...tried a few other things today that worked well and i will do them again but i won't bore you with the details :)

Anyways, just thought i would share..

Sounds like you've made great progress already!  Teaching them how to learn, before teaching them what they need to learn, is an excellent strategy.

Keep it up!
