JazzPipes Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 Hey guys, noob angler here, I was wondering what are the top water baits you guys like to use, besides frogs when targeting for bass? I dont have many of those in my tackle box so I'm looking to get some. Let me know what do you like to use and at what time of the day! best! Quote
Super User MIbassyaker Posted September 2, 2015 Super User Posted September 2, 2015 morning, evening, cloudy, night Popper Buzzbait Buzz toad (Stanley Ribbit, Rage toad) Propbaits (Heddon torpedo) Jitterbug Spook Any weightless, texas rigged plastic bait -- senko, trick worm, fluke, craw, creature, etc. (EDIT: Did I forgot anything? Anyway, they all work!) 1 Quote
NotnatsSamoht Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 Early morning while the sun's coming up, I'll throw popper and spook type baits, there's also buzzbaits, prop baits, and more. I like to start with a popper though. 1 Quote
Super User MIbassyaker Posted September 2, 2015 Super User Posted September 2, 2015 Poppers are a good place to start. Easy to learn, hard to get wrong. I have a particular fondness for propbaits, though -- you can work them steady and fast like a buzzbait, or slow like a popper, or something in between..rip, rip, pause....., rip, rip pause... 1 Quote

ABW Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 Dunno about you but that Jackall Pomadour is callin my name 1 Quote
FinCulture Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 Lots of companies make buzzbaits, Booyah Strike King an Wareagle to name a few. Don't worry about all the clacker and double-propped ones. Just go with your regular single-prop for now. Heddon has the torpedo, a solid propbait, and they have a couple variations of the spook. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 2, 2015 Global Moderator Posted September 2, 2015 Buzzbait, popper, and a spook are my favorites. 1 Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted September 2, 2015 Super User Posted September 2, 2015 My best is Pop R-type popper. Get them all because there'll be days when they'll hit one and not another. My favs: Chug'n Spook, Jr. Frog Chug Bug Pop r 1 Quote

Super User A-Jay Posted September 2, 2015 Super User Posted September 2, 2015 An often overlooked surface presentation many places (except FLA) is a Swimbait type bait weightless on an EWG hook slow rolled right over the Old Fat Ladies head. Reation Innovations Skinny Dipper, Gambler Big Easy, and Z-Man Grass Kickerz are all solid choices. A-Jay 2 Quote

It wont create much of a commotion , just come straight in . I buzzed curl tail worms like the Gator tail and curl tail grubs . Quote

I always carry a pack of swimming caffeine shads just for this purpose. Saw it on an episode of Strike King fish hard on Okeechobee ... tried it ... it worked ... kept doing it. 1 Quote
NathanW Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 If you are fishing from the shore I think the small Pop-R makes the most sense. It will get you the most bites and build your confidence. From a boat I would consider a Spook or Spook Jr. so you can learn how to cover lots of water, or if you have a lot of cover in your lake a buzzbait. 1 Quote

A deadly lure down in southern marshes is a Zoom Ultravibe Speed Craw buzzed on top! Aint a lot of commotion there but it produces huge bass! 1 Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted September 2, 2015 Super User Posted September 2, 2015 Got one word for ya. Cavitron. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted September 2, 2015 Super User Posted September 2, 2015 I like the pop-r. It has been my top producing hard bait this year. I also like running a 6" straight worm, or a 6" senko type bait across the top of the water. It doesn't create a lot of action, but it gives off a good wake behind it. Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted September 2, 2015 Super User Posted September 2, 2015 Zoom uvibes, Flukes, spook, chug bug, mouse, that's just to name a few. Quote

Super User MIbassyaker Posted September 3, 2015 Super User Posted September 3, 2015 How do I buzz it? Ive never done this! buzz it = rig it weedless and move it fast enough to keep it on top with any legs/arms/tails/appendages wiggling. You can buzz just about any plastic bait as a topwater. Some, like the Stanley Ribbit, the Rage Toad and Rage shad are made specifically for this. 1 Quote
Super User MIbassyaker Posted September 3, 2015 Super User Posted September 3, 2015 Can you give some examples for me? Like models you like? I need more specifics! :-) most of the other suggestions are consistent with what I like: Popper: Rebel Pop-R, Chug bug, Hula Popper Buzzbait; Megastrike Cavitron Propbait: Heddon Torpedo (I actually prefer the smaller Tiny Torpedo, 1/4oz) Walking bait: Zara Spook 1 Quote
massrob Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 My favorite top water bait is the river2sea whopper plopper. I love it. Quote
