fishgasm Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 Hey guys, I'm wanting to get a new rod. I was really hyped about getting a few mojo bass rods by St croix- but people give them so much crap on here! I have only used ugly stiks and Abu rods under $80 to success (I have used other rods which broke). My thoughts on why people bash the mojo bass rods on here is because they use really high end gear, where all I want is to upgrade from very cheap rods. Can you guys at least assure me that the mojo bass rods are better than the ugly stiks and Abu rods I've been using??? To give you an idea, the most sensitive I own is the ugly stik intercostal 6' 6" Medium 2 pc. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted August 30, 2015 Global Moderator Posted August 30, 2015 I use to have several Mojos. While they're not the most sensitive or the lightest rods out there, I caught a ton of fish with mine. It doesn't matter how light and sensitive the rod is by itself if it's not in the hands of someone who knows what to do with it. Mojos are one of the toughest rods I've ever owned, so if you're having breakage issues they would probably be a good option. I have a couple Abu Vendettas I've had good success with also that are a bit cheaper (way cheaper if you find them on sale like I did). Actually right now you can find the St.Croix Rage rods on sale for half price about everywhere. I just bought a 7' 6" MH/F casting Rage for $89 with free shipping from St. Croix's bargain room a few weeks ago. There's still a bunch of them listed in there right now too for the same deal ($89 with free shipping/hat/decal). 1 Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted August 30, 2015 Super User Posted August 30, 2015 I don't have any experience with the Mojo's but they will definitely be a step up from what you're using now. I will 2nd Bluebasser's recommendation of the Rage line of rods. I bought a 7'11" HMF a couple of weeks ago and the rod is great for the price. It is cheaper than the Mojo and has a better blank. The free hat is actually decent too. Quote
fishgasm Posted August 30, 2015 Author Posted August 30, 2015 Thanks guys, I'll look into the Rage rods. I'll still consider the mojo if they are durable as you said. The rage rid sounds like a great price point for me especially with the hat lol. Quote
fishgasm Posted August 30, 2015 Author Posted August 30, 2015 Also, if this helps, I was in the market for a drop shot rod. So I want the most sensitive Rod I can get in my $100 budget. In time I want a cranking stick and some other casting rods but this question is mainly posed towards drops shorting. While I have this post up, does anyone have any fluro carbon recommendations? I've heard good things about Seagur, P line, viscious and sun line but I've only ever used mono and braid. Thanks. Quote
FinCulture Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 I have a Rage and it is GREAT! But wait until 2016, they're coming out with a new mojo bass! It's going for $120 but is an SCIII rod blank, the same as the Rage and the Avid(X). And yes, a St. Croix will be a HUGE step up from an ugly stik. After I got my Rage, I couldn't fish my ugly stik any more, it just felt too heavy and insensitive. After you step up, you'll be able to truly feel the quality of your old rods. Quote
Musky_Fever Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 I have a Mojo rod for cranks/jerks and I would suggest not getting one. For that price, I have cheaper rods that are more sensitive. I think if you end up getting the Mojo, you'll be dis-appointed like I was. Plus, it's purple. Yuck. Quote
kschultz76 Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 St Croix makes a great rod, and what you're looking at will be a step up from what you've had previously. I'd suggest as others you look at the clearances Rage rods in St Croix's bargain room as they are a really good deal, and will be a better blank then the current Mojo line. Also I'd agree if you want the Mojo try to wait for the new version with the SCIII blank to be released. The better blank material will be an improvement in sensitivity and weight, and hopefully they tweak the design with other improvements. Take a hard long look at the Rage, the reel seats and grips on them aren't for everyone. Quote
fishgasm Posted August 30, 2015 Author Posted August 30, 2015 I read in multiple reviews on TWH that the tips snapped on the 6' 8" M XF rage spinning rod. Not a big fan of the handle design either but I can't judge it until I try it. Thanks for letting me know about the different Rod blanks, people do say that the SC2 to SC3 is a huge jump! One thing I do like about the esthetics of the rage are the colors (it would look great with my Stradic Ci4+) I'm going to most likely give it a try (the price is unbeatable) and if I don't like it, I'll get a new Mojo for next season! thanks for your responses! Super User flyfisher Posted August 30, 2015 Super User Posted August 30, 2015 Mojo is a good rod. I also had the 6'8" MXF spinning rod and it was used the most out of all my rods and never had an issue. I wil echo though that you want to get the rage at the price they are offering them right now. I picked up three of them a few years back and have been very very pleased with their performance. If i could justify another rod or two, I would be all over them right now for that price. Quote
stk44 Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 I have the mojo bass glass crankster. Its 7'4 Medium moderate action I believe. It isn't extremely sensitive. But that's ok, that's why I have a fiberglass rod. It's for cranking. I use it for swimbaits, rapalas up to DT 10, and buzzbaits. I caught a few nice bass on it this morning and that's all that matters. It feels great in my hands and IMO it's a higher end rod. I don't pay 500 dollars for fishing rods, I'm just not that way. I think its a great rod. I also use a Shimano sellus, and I think that's a great rod too. I don't know what bad you coud really say about it. Quote
ced Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 d**n, looks like they stealth upgraded the Mojo, and I just bought one. http://stcroixrods.com/products/freshwater/mojo-bass Now featuring SCIII graphite and IPC® tooling technology, they are more balanced and sensitive than ever before, not to mention up to 15% lighter. cbass12 Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 d**n, looks like they stealth upgraded the Mojo, and I just bought one. http://stcroixrods.com/products/freshwater/mojo-bass I've been looking forward to getting one. I actually have a rage that has a semi-loose reel nut, comes loose sometimes when I set the hook. I've been sitting on it, waiting until now to send it in and exchange it for one of these new Mojos. I guess it's about time!! And the old Mojos are now in the bargain room for $89....seems like they should be cheaper considering how much they discounted the Rage series. Quote

The new line of Mojo's has a 6'10" ML/XF spinning rod, I would definitely recommend that for drop shotting. Seaguar Red Label is a decent floro, Sunline Super Floro has been good to me as well. Never used their floroucarbon, but P-Line is supposed to be pretty good. Quote
