nralover Posted August 29, 2015 Posted August 29, 2015 Guys, I have a 6'6" M/F casting rod that I use for light jigs and worms, and wanted opinions on a tough mono line in the 10-12 lb range. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted August 29, 2015 Super User Posted August 29, 2015 Most rods have the rating printed on them, but not all. Quote
nralover Posted August 29, 2015 Author Posted August 29, 2015 Most rods have the rating printed on them, but not all. Well, it is rated for 10-17. I will use 10 or 12, but was wondering about a brand of line. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted August 29, 2015 Super User Posted August 29, 2015 Copolymer line. I like Excalibur silver thread copolymer line. Light jigs and worms,,,,,,,? 8lb / 10lb test? Quote
MrBigFishSC Posted August 29, 2015 Posted August 29, 2015 There are lots of options in 10-12 lb range. Trilene XT is available everywhere, is inexpensive, and casts OK on BC. I use BPS Excel mono on my M BC setup. Cheap but works great for me. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted August 29, 2015 Super User Posted August 29, 2015 I've tried a lot of different lines and this season I found one of the best mono lines I ever used, Spider Wire Ultimate Mono!! I got it to try as it was advertised to be the lowest stretch mono while being very thin and everything stated is true. The line is as thin as most fluorocarbon lines and thinner than every other mono and it has very little stretch, I've used it in 6lb, 8lb, 10lb, and 14lb and no break offs, no knot failures, and before I forget, the abrasion resistance is outstanding. The only knock is that it has a little more memory on spinning reels, not as much as fluorocarbon but it is there and the best part is 2 spritzes of KVD Line and lure conditioner and you're good to go for the day. I emailed pure fishing and I got a reply from them telling me the line is optimized for casting reels but it works ok in the lower strengths for spinning reels, of course I should have read the box saying optimized for casting reels but I still love the 8lb line on my 2500 size reel and what a coincidence, I just put a fresh spool on my Daiwa Tierra 2500 spinning reel as the spool of line was getting low since the start of the season from cutting off and retying every trip out. Give it a shot, I'm sure you'll like it. Quote
papajoe222 Posted August 29, 2015 Posted August 29, 2015 I've been using Original Clear Blue Stren for decades. It's an easy line to watch when worming/jigging, isn't as stretchy as some and is more abrasion resistant than Big Game or XT, IMO. McCoy MeanGreen would be second on my list only because I'm a line watcher and it's difficult to see under most conditions. Quote
FinCulture Posted August 29, 2015 Posted August 29, 2015 id say 8 but wouldn't go higher than ten. Quote
Jaw1 Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 P-line gets my vote followed by Stren super knot or original. Both are extremely better than any trilene product that I've ever tried. I'm also a fan of seagaur but it's not as readily accessible to me as the others. Quote
Allen Der Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 I use Sufix Siege 12lb on my medium casting rods Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted August 30, 2015 Super User Posted August 30, 2015 I use Sufix Siege 12lb on my medium casting rods X2. I like it better than Big Game because I think it handles better after sitting awhile. Purchased some AN40 based on Dan's opinion of it and so far I like it. Now he has me itching to try some Spider Wire Ultimate Mono except it is going to be awhile before I need new line. OP, spinning or baitcast reel? Izorline Platinum and P-Line CXX are suppose to be tough, abrasive resistant lines, but I wouldn't be using 12# of either on a spinning reel. Matter of fact I removed 12# Platinum from my daughter's b/c reel because she said it was backlashing too much. Spooled on 12# Siege, and haven't heard a complaint from her since. EDIT: Some of her problem with backlashes is probably because she doesn't get to fish much. However, since buying her the b/c outfit she hasn't taken her spinning rods with her once to go fishing. Guess she takes after her old man. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted August 30, 2015 Super User Posted August 30, 2015 id say 8 but wouldn't go higher than ten. Assuming it's a small reel as reel size wasn't mentioned, I'd be picking braid. Quote
zell_pop1 Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 10 lb in yo zuri, or siege, mccoys, or gamma. Quote
