ToledoEF Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 Ok this only happened one one bait so I am not sure what happened! I use createx paint and have been clearing them with clear laquer or some sort of clear paint! What do you clear with before using epoxy? Quote
ToledoEF Posted November 11, 2009 Author Posted November 11, 2009 what do you use? devcon? I got some cs coatings 2 party epoxy and brushed it on! Quote
Fishwhittler Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 I don't use Createx, I use rattle cans but I do clear with Minwax Polyacrylic before epoxy. Then again I use Flex Coat epoxy, not Devcon so the chemicals won't react in exactly the same way. The Polyacrylic will probably stop the paint from reacting with the Devcon though. Hope this helps. ToledoEF Posted November 11, 2009 Author Posted November 11, 2009 do you dip it? and can I use it with plastic baits or is that just for wood lures? Quote
Fishwhittler Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 I brush it on. I wouldn't recommend dipping it because it will run if you put it on to thick. I haven't used it on plastic lures but I don't know why it wouldn't work. Quote
ToledoEF Posted November 11, 2009 Author Posted November 11, 2009 I may try that next time! I also want to try etex, but I dont have the funds to build a drying wheel right now! Quote
whittler Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 Did the cracking take place before the bait was fished or after it got wet? If it cracked before use it is most likley an incompatability problem, if after it was wet it is usually a leakage problem around the lip or hook hangers. Once water gets to wood it will crack the epoxy. Quote
Fishwhittler Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 I use Flex-Coat Ultra V high build epoxy for my lures and I don't use a drying wheel; I just hang the lure by the line tie and let it cure. This results in a blob of epoxy on the tail but that can be removed with a dremel. Hope this helps. Ben Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted November 11, 2009 Super User Posted November 11, 2009 when i was using devcon 2 ton, i never cleared with anything beforehand and i really don't see the need to. devcon is pretty inert and doesn't really react with anything. Quote

I use createx paint and have been clearing them with clear laquer or some sort of clear paint! What do you clear with before using epoxy? Since the problem only occured with one bait, (asumming here that you did more than one at the same time) the type of epoxy used should not make any difference. Using a solvent based clear over waterbased paint could be one of your problems. Have you done others using the same thing without problems? My question in the first post still remains, was the bait put in the water? Excess moisture in the wood itself will also crack epoxy when it is sealed in the bait. A trick to remove moisture from wood is to microwave your blanks, just enough that they are warm to the touch, leave them in the microwave until they cool a little and repeat the process a few more times. Keep your carving wood in a warm dry place. Quote
ToledoEF Posted November 11, 2009 Author Posted November 11, 2009 These were plastic cranks! I am using a 2 part epoxy from cs coatings that is viynl based! I think it had effect on the waterbased stuff I am using! I am gonna try and find some devcon and try that out! Quote
buzzcatcher Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 I use Createx paints and E-Tex epoxy. I rushed a bait once {okay maybe twice} by simply putting to many coats on at one time and clearing before they cured which caused the paint under the epoxy to crackle I guess you would call it. Slow down and epoxy the next day and you should be fine. Also the only thing I use water-based clear on is my signature because the epoxy will smear it. How ever you could skip this step if you have the right pen. I am not sure this is your problem but that's what it sounds like to me. Buzz Quote
