The_Natural Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 I'm obviously no pro, but I think I am good enough with my airbrush to paint general patterns. I've made a few baits, and they seem to run OK, but no two baits run the exact same (this is good and bad I realize). Anyway...I just spent almost $100 buying some WEC baits (my favorite custom cranks), even though I thought I would never spend more than $20 on a balsa crankbait ever again. Honestly, That's why I got started in the hobby. Granted Ed has been making baits a long time and I can't expect to match him, I still thought I was done buying expensive balsa cranks because I can 'make my own'. Oh well.....
whittler Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 Although I make baits I have no problems with buying another makers baits. As a maker you know what it takes to make a quality bait and I always enjoy having and fishing other makers baits, it makes your own work only get better. Talking wood handmade baits here, not the cookie cutter, stamped out like bottle cap plastic baits. I have also found that most builders are willing to trade with others and you can get a very good collection that way. I'll take the bait of a craftsman who is proud to put his signature on their product any day.
wickyman Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 Same here. I personally only buy lures that I know are able to work. I only also buy balsa cranks. I prefer some rapalas, but then again, if I can get away with it, I will spend a little more and buy the custom baits. It all depends on what I want, and when I can get it. I get almost all of my soft plastics from my brother in law. He is great at pouring, and I wasn't really able to do it, flawlessly... I just make some lures, and if they don't work, I keep at it... Eventually I find the right concoction and keep on that line...
BobP Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 I build baits that catch fish but I don't build every type of bait in every depth/action/paint category so have to fill in my fishing arsenal with baits made by others. Some custom, some commercial. No shame in that! And the baits I buy from others teaches me a lot about how to build my own baits better, so it's a "Two-fer".
