Random Tackle Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Spook Jr. and Jumpin' Minnow but lately all I've used is a Sammy. Quote
lo n slo Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Heddon Zara Spook or Strike King Sexy Dawg are good choices I've been throwing a Sexy Dawg Jr lately but have'nt had a strike. It does some pretty walking though. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted August 26, 2015 Super User Posted August 26, 2015 I havent used many walking baits but the Spook is very easy to make walk. Use a 5.5 foot pistol grip rod . The short rod and handle makes it a lot easier . Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted August 26, 2015 Super User Posted August 26, 2015 another vote for the spook, but the megabass giant dog x is a killer bait that is super easy to walk too.... just far more expensive than the plain old spook. i felt that a sammy was the hardest to walk... i could never do it right for some reason. Super User Choporoz Posted August 26, 2015 Super User Posted August 26, 2015 Just started using a Sammy the last few weeks....it walks like a champ, to be sure....but I'm not certain I like that it pauses vertically...might be great, but I haven't had a hit on the pause like I do sometimes with spooks....maybe I missed it mentioned above, but the clear spook is my favorite....when I first got it many years ago, I thought it was a gimmick or a toy....but it gets more hits per cast than any other walking bait I have. Super User Choporoz Posted August 26, 2015 Super User Posted August 26, 2015 LOL...I didn't see BB's post when I was typing mine....I think the Sammy I was referring to had been yours previously, Buzz...I love the way it walks.... 1 Quote
DaleGribble Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Sexy dawg walk easiest in my experience. They basically walk themselves. Yozuri makes good ones too. The lc Sammy's didn't walk very well for me but they sure are pretty. Quote
NathanW Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 They are all easy but just go with the spook and spook Jr. sharpen the hooks and be done, replace them with Gammakatsus if you are fishing them around shallow rock. If you have buoyant line and the right loop knot it should only take you about 15-20 minutes to learn how to walk it. Learning when and where to throw it is a whole different deal. Quote

LunkerFisher Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Zara spook and the Yamamoto Tate pencil Quote
Crankinstein Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Duo Pencil is the easiest in my opinion. Great bait too!! 1 Quote
Cgrinder Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Gunfish has my vote for easiest/best. Sammies are good but they like a quick, constant cadence. It sits straight down on the pause and getting it to smoothly start back up is hit or miss. I catch a lot of fish on a Crack Blue Sammy 100 during Fall though when they're hitting that retrieve. Super User smalljaw67 Posted August 26, 2015 Super User Posted August 26, 2015 I never really had a problem with walking baits but my buddy has had a difficult time keeping them going. So, based on his input I'll say the discontinued Yo-Zuri Banana Boat and the Lucky Craft Sammy, my buddy can work both of those baits fine. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 26, 2015 Super User Posted August 26, 2015 Take your choice, Sammy or Spook. Quote
Super User WRB Posted August 26, 2015 Super User Posted August 26, 2015 What you call a "spook" dates back into 1920's, the Heddon Zaragosa surface lure isn't a natural walk the dog lure, you must learn the cadence to walk a spook. The Super Spook with hanging hooks is easier to walk, similar to a Sammy. I mentioned the Zip N Ziggy, overlooked lure that walks without angler skill, sits tail down, has a internal sliding weight and casts like a bullet. If you are a Spook angler, try it. Tom Quote
Jaderose Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 If you can't walk a Spook, give it up. Sexy Dawgs are pretty easy too. You can walk most anything once you get the action down Quote
Super User bigbill Posted August 27, 2015 Super User Posted August 27, 2015 Walk the dog on top. But hold the rod tip down and reel. I call it "dive the dog". It runs erract under the water going side to side crazy. You can see the strike. Quote
evilcatfish Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 I must have had a defective Punker, that was the hardest bait to walk I've ever owned I think other than a tiny bait like a Zara Pooch. Once it was walking it wasn't bad, but getting it to start was terrible. It was one of the injected baits though, not one of the wooden ones so maybe that had something to do with it. Sorry to hear about yout punker experience. Maybe it was a defective one or something. What size was it? They definitely take a little practice since they are bigger than the walking type baits most are used to Quote
ned_riggins Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 Super spook and super spook jr. Easiest bait to walk, its cheap, I know some replace the hooks ive never had a problem with them. Its been around for 80 years for a reason! Quote
microotter Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 The yo zuri zz walker is the easiest that I have personally tried. It is easier than a sammy and spook for me. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted August 27, 2015 Super User Posted August 27, 2015 I find that the Sammy walks best for me. I got better at walking stick baits once I got gear that works for me. Current favorite is an old MItchell Fulcrum, 5'9" MH straight handle bait casting rod. I use a 200 size Curado or a Calcutta 200 TEGT reel, 14 or 17 mono. I use this same rig for poppers. I find that with longer rods, doing the sharp downward pop, I smack the rod tip into the side of the boat too often. Anyway, that's what works for me. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted August 27, 2015 Super User Posted August 27, 2015 Dog-walking is possible with most any lure, just be sure that there's some 'line-slack' Before & After each twitch. The proper cadence creates the illusion that rod is a drumstick and the hull is a drum ;-)) Topwaters with a heavy tail-weight practically zigzag by themselves, a good example is the Boze ZZ Walker. Roger Quote
Super User Catt Posted August 27, 2015 Super User Posted August 27, 2015 Exactly Roger! I'll "walk the dog" with a Spook, Torpedo, Pop-R, or soft bodied frog. Like someone mentioned I'll use the same rhythm with subsurface lures like a fluke, Senko, or even a Rogue. Rarely do I want these lures going in a straight line & even more so when others in the area throwing the same lures! Quote
