Input Needed....... Rod For Pixy L Or Ml?? ***rod Found***

Hi everyone hoping to get some help here.

I was just turned onto the awesomeness that is the Pixy Type R. I thought that I had a good match for it rod wise but it's a 6' M with a stiff tip. While it does great with almost every small lure that I have it can't throw the smallest 1/8 oz cranks so I need something different. I can throw those on my Shimano Jackall PA 66L spinning rod but I want to be able to do it with my Pixy too.

So..... I like shorter say 6' - 6'5.  Have been playing heck trying to track down a suitable rod. I think that I would like a ML but not opposed to a L.

Any input from current or past Pixy users on what worked best.

Thanks in advance for your valued time!

ML.

There is one rod that to my eyes is the perfect rod for a Pixy ----> GLoomis CR721 IMX.  :respect-059:

I agree with Raul!

The Pixy/721 is THE rod for the Pixy.

I've also used the 781 IMX and the Jackson Trickster 6'4" which was great.

And, it if you want to go "whole hog" get a Megabass Hedgehog rod.   Absolutely fabulous.  {also great with a Zonda 10 or an Aldebaran)

The CR721 will go below it's 3/16oz rating. I throw Strike King Bitsy Minnows which are advertised as 1/8oz but they are lighter than that. The rod that I am going to be ordering in a week or so is the Shimano Poison Adrena 166L BFS and hopefully it will do what my CR721's will do.

I have a *** *** 6'10" ML/F, Diawa Tatula 7' ML/R (reaction), and a BPS ML/F 7' Crankin' stick. I mounted my Core 50Mg and *** on all three and wouldn't go any lighter. All three rods throw baits down to 3/16 pretty well but don't have much backbone for hook setting.

Of the three, the *** is the lightest, the Crankin' Stick the whippiest, and the Tatula 'feels' the best (just a couple grams heavier than the ***).

Good luck with your ML rod.

I put my PX Type R on a Kistler KLX 6'9" MHF "Finesse worm/tube/jig" rod.  It's rated for 1/8- to 3/4-ounce baits (!).  I like it a lot, but after reading this thread, I'm dying to get a IMX 721CR.  :-)

Tight lines,

Bob

If you want a 6'6" rod, the Loomis MBR782GLX does a fine job at throwing the Bitsy Minnow size mini cranks. It's a medium which in Loomis power rating is probably like everyone else's ML and it has a really nice soft tip that loads easily.

1/8 crank is pretty light. I'm not sure if a ML can get accuracy. I'm testing the limits of my ML rod yesterday on a bait finesse reel. I'm not sure what the weight was but throwing 1/8 jig head wit a grub was the low limit IMO.

I think you want want to step it down to a L rod. I'll be trying to get a 6'5L rod next.

L, ML .... Are all subjective terms. Don't get hung up on labels. Look at the lure weight range and pick something where your favorite baits fall near the mid range. Handling the rod is good if possible but fishing is the only true test.

I have the CR721 and Phenix Recon 2 682L. I prefer the Phenix for my Pixy SPR. The light action and lure rating from 1/16 to 3/8 fit the bill for what I use the combo for which is mostly Ned rigs. 1/8 and 1/4 is where this rod shines. I use it for many different applications from ned rigs, shaky heads, bitsy flip jigs, and small spinners. The smallest lve attempted to throw with it is a 1/16th crappie jig. It will toss it....but it its not far and not accurate and it will backlash in a hot second. Now a 1/16 with a bigger worm I think would work but then again I haven't attempted it yet so don't quote me on that. I have two spools ready to go with either 30lb power pro or 6lb yozuri hybrid.

Can't go wrong with the CR721 either, its a solid rod and they make a great combo but I just prefer the Phenix.

Like DVT said, the power ratings are subjective. I throw 1/8 just fine and dandy on my medium light Recon. How much backbone do you want the rod to have? You may want to look at the Major Craft Corzza line as they should be readily available soon. Most light powered rods I've come across are rather whippy. The Recon us nice because it flexes pretty deep and loads great.

Thanks for all the input guy's!  I've done a lot of web surfing over the last few days trying to find a perfect match, ( other others opinions of ) the Pixy. I have a great local tackle shop, Susquehanna Fishing Tackle, very close to me. I have been up there checking out different rods but they really don't carry much in the light and medium light dept. I did try a Loomis MBR 782 IMX and liked it but it still wasn't enough to make consistent accurate casts with a 1/8oz bullet weight. Nice ride though.

I have a Loomis CR721 on the way that I will try. It comes with a return if need be. I am currently researching MegaBass. I was told to checkout the HedgeHog and the Super Cliff Hanger and I am looking them over. Phenix will be next to look over.

Again thanks and please keep the info coming. I am not opposed to a JDM rod either. I just want a top notch rod tor the Pixy. I can tell that it going to be a main rig for me.

I'd either get one'a them thar Lamiglas 7'2" ML casting rods or a custom ML with some recoils.

go with a full custom , look into spinning rod blanks for the taper and backbone your'e looking for , i'm thinking of having one built but not for that light of lure rating , gonna build on a Phenix ultra 707ML , gonna use it for weightless stickbaits and small crankbaits , good luck ..

UPDATE:

Thanks for everyone's input on helping me narrow down and finally decide on a rod. I spent countless hours over several days trying to find what I hope would be the ultimate rod for my Pixy R. Well after a little searching and a conversation with Gary at TTT I decided on a MegaBass Destroyer X7 F2- 63X7 Super Cliffhanger. A somewhat local dealer happen to have one in stock so I grabbed it and boy let me tell you what....... she's a beaut Clark! This rod simply is a work of art. To say that I am impressed is a gross understatement and this coming from a guy with NRX, GLX and Steez rods in his arsenal. The Pixy feels perfect on the rod. I would know what else to ask of or expect from a light casting BFS set up. Maybe after the honeymoon is over I will do a rod review and give share my observations and my overall opinion.

Again thanks for everyone's input. You all have helped in one way or another with your comments!

If that rod fishes as nice as it looks, you'll be all set!  Sweet!

Good luck with the new combo,

Bob
