The hula grub is a "must have" lure - especially if you're fishing for smallmouth (although they work great on largemouth too!).  Here's how to fish them.

Let me know your thoughts!

I believe the Hula grub is overlooked by a lot of bass anglers today, probably the best entry level jig design available.

The Hula grub was originally known as a spider jig created by Bobby Garland in the early 70's using a spider skirt ( tube cut legs on both ends) combined with a single or twin tail grub on a plain jig, no other skirt.

Gary Yamamoto combined the spider skirt and grub into the one piece "Hula grub".

Good Video Glenn, hope members give this a try. Both the 4" and 5" twin tail Hula grub can be fished using baitcasting tackle on plain football head jig 1/4 to 1/2 oz using the same technique.

Great video! I have a few bags of these, but as WRB says, I am definitely guilty of overlooking them. They're so goofy-looking, I haven't been quite been sure what to do with them.

I T-Rig these weightless and toss them under overhangs in the shade.  They sink really slow and with all the flaring and movement they get hammered.

I have a pack of hula grub in pumpkin color, tried it only a few time mostly weightless but never caught fish on it.I plan to try it again soon with 1/8 owner ultra football head.

Love these. Try them on a shakey head. It treats me well around grass

I still have the gonzo grubs from Yum(skirted twin tail,5").t-rig or weightless, great lure.

Smallies love em too. When the skirt falls off your jig use these for an effective presentation.

It's a good video, Glenn. A good addition to the BR library.

You have a nice presentation style... friendly, clear, and easy to follow. Length is good. If I have one criticism it's the lack of scene diversity. Breaking things up a bit with different camera angles, and possibly some B-roll, would make them visually more interesting. Not a lot either, as your vids being educational are clear and to the point.

Thanks Paul, I appreciate the feedback.  Note this video is nearly 2 years old. My newer ones have more B-roll and edits, just as you suggested.

Thanks @Glennfor reminding about Hula Grub, and @Bassin' Bradfor bringing back the old thread.

Caught one today about 3lber on 1/8 owner ultra jig head. Too bad I only brought one and it got destroyed by that bass.IMG_0118.thumb.JPG.d301f469352fe91f1070fb0656402d49.JPG

I had a good year last year with these. I even lost one that would have shattered my PB. They do mostly appeal to smallish bass, but not always. I've mostly used them T-rigged with 1/8 or 3/16 oz. bullet weight. This bait has saved the day for me several times. Sometimes fish will hit them as you're reeling back up to cast again.

nice video, guess I'm gonna have to get some. lots of steep ledges on lay lake AL.

The Yamamoto Hula is a great bait.  I use them as trailers and also will fish them weightless T rigged or on a football jig head.
