Jacob Krahenbil Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Hey yall so I got two questions one I recently got a brand new Shimano crucial bait casting rod. It is a 7' medium Xtra fast. I was wondering if anyone else had one. On mine the action feels more like a medium heavy to heavy because of the way the rod bends. I haven't even put a reel on it yet. Just wondering if anyone else has any experience with one? Secondly I also got some Berkley cherywood spinning and bait cater rods. Both of them 6'6 medium any reviews or ideas on what to thrown on them? Thanks Quote
MidwestF1sh Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 The extra fast action is probably what makes you think it feels heavier. The action (slow or fast) is how far down the blank the rod bends. So it might be a power of a med but with the extra fast the rods really only going to bend near the tip. Its hard to explain but there's tons of diagrams that shows you a visual of what I am trying to say. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted August 24, 2015 Super User Posted August 24, 2015 The 7' M-XF will make an excellent Senko and light plastics rod, if you fish tubes you will not want another rod to fish them after the first use. The Cherrywood rods in a 6'6" medium power will be good for jerkbaits, small shallow cranks, light spinnerbaits and light plastics but they aren't the most sensitive rods so I'd keep them as moving bait set ups. Super User WIGuide Posted August 24, 2015 Super User Posted August 24, 2015 The best I can describe it is think of power as the amount or force it takes to flex a rod blank. The action is describing the taper of the tip of the rod. (think of where the power tapers off) A rod that has an extra fast action will taper off quickly from the power of the rod blank to the tip. This results in a rod that gets to the power of the rod blank very quickly as it bends, where as a fast action does not taper off from the power of the blank as quickly so more of the rod will be lower than the rated power of the blank and it will flex deeper into the blank. I don't know if that really clears it up or not but I gave it a shot haha. Also worth checking out to explain things http://stcroixrods.com/why-st-croix/power-action/ Quote
