For starters, my mom who was laid off from her job and hasn't fished for over 10 years asked me to take her fishing because she hadn't been in my new boat yet. So we loaded up the boat and headed to one of my favorite lakes I knew she'd catch some fish. We managed to get her on several fish including a couple smallmouth in the 3 pound range (she'd never caught a smallmouth and was shocked how hard they fight). I was also targeting smallies, but as per usual I had a couple fish that didn't get that memo. 1 Quote

About the closest thing to a tuna we have in Kansas is a wiper I guess. Could have listed the name in the title I suppose but I did write it in the description on Youtube, it's a freshwater drum, which goes by about a dozen different names depending on what part of the country you're in. That's a freshwater drum if I'm not mistaken. Great fight, not particularly useful. They're a pretty popular food fish around here actually. It's funny they get a bad rap. They're aggressive, fight hard, and are closely related to the red and black drum of the ocean that are both very popular food fish and have a firm, white meat very similar to those two. Sorry to hear about your Mom. Getting laid off stinks. Nice vids. Thanks man. She's worked hard for the same company for 18 years before they decided to downsize and since she was a well paid manager, her spot was eliminated. Thankfully because of her dedication and hard work she got the first position she applied for and will be back at work next week after she gets back from her much deserved vacation that she's on with my dad right now Quote
VolFan Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 I had heard that about them when I lived in TN. I used to catch them on a sadly regular basis fishing for stripers and bass below Ft Loudon dam. Never tried eating one, so I guess I can't say one way or the other there. They do have very strong mouths and can crush crank baits and trebles like they're eggs. Quote

We do catch some monsters down here. The biggest freshwater fish I have ever landed was caught fishing jerkbaits off a sheer cliff late one evening on Bull Shoals.
