bassheel Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 I just did a sort of wish list for the coming months. Things that I need to replace or just wanted to try out. Line,scents,plastics,hard baits,hooks and assosories.Nothing but a few hard baits came to $10 each. Nothing over that like a swim bait. My total was over $700. Still have a Seibert order to go for a few things. Plus reel cleaning in the winter. Still want two combos as well!! Anyone else have the baitmonkey beating you up? 1 Quote

Even if you dont do alot of impulse buying you still have quite a few basic costs... teminal tackle, lures, plastics, line, reel maintenance, boat upkeep, gas, licenses, etc. If you fish regularly and do well catching fish and getting snagged your costs are even higher. It's hard to say no when things look interesting and fun to try. Technology and innovation also helps feed the need to buy. High gear ratios, lighter weight reels, new graphite material, lures, plastic molds, colors, SI/DI etc... The only way to get around the Monkey would be to set a monthly or yearly fishing budget or open up a bank account to use strictly for it. Maybe put a % of your check in that account as you get paid. If you have money in there and all other obligations are satisified than you can satisfy the monkey! Quote

Without including licenses, gas, etc I would say I spend $50-100 a week easily and most weeks even more. I try to buy terminal tackle, line, etc in the winter so I don't have to buy those things in the summer and instead can buy cool baits instead some more T-rigged weights. It brings more satisfaction. Also, the MTB does a good job of reducing my spending. I know I am getting something around the 14th of every month so I don't quite feel the need to go out any buy new lures every week. I wait not so patiently for that magical box. So yes, the bait monkey beats me up on the regular. Quote

I've also recently become terribly addicted to skipping a jig under boat docks and I'm in a quest to find the jig/trailer that skips the best. I can't take the $$ with me when I leave the earth so I'm spending it here. Right now it's inline spinners. Silver blade, dressed black Silver blade, dressed white Gold blade, dressed green I could pick out $100 worth of them easily. I need cheaper ones for river fishing too. Quote
Jaw1 Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 I'm trying to curve my bait addiction but the winter months will be the real test. I've decided to clean out most of the stuff I haven't used in the last two years ,sell it of in the flea market,craigslist,and eBay. Whatever I get from it will be my tackle budget for the winter shopping binge. I spent at least $2000 last winter just by doing the rough math in my head. This doesn't include the impulse buys I don't remember, but fishing my only hobby I don't hunt so I guess it could be worse. 1 Quote
Super User MIbassyaker Posted August 23, 2015 Super User Posted August 23, 2015 I have managed to satisfy the bait monkey for now, with recent orders from TW and Siebert, subscriptions to MTB and LTB, and a lucky random draw of my name by BioSpawn to receive some samples to test this month. I start another academic year in another week (I'm a college professor), and all fishing will grind to a halt by the end of September. Once the semester gets busy, the bait monkey goes into hibernation and fishing is out-of-sight/out-of-mind until he wakes up around March or April, and I can start thinking about it again. Quote
