UKCATSBASSER Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 I know I posted the topic of an NRX or GLX earlier but many people have recommended I take a look at the croix ltb series of bass rods. Anyone fished one? Looks like the plastics Rod is the same weight as my 6'"6 medium premier casting Rod I use for jerkbaits and topwaters. Looking at either the plastics Rod or the spinner Rod. Pretty much the same except M vs MH. If you threw mostly 3/8 jigs and weights plus plastic which would you opt for? Quote
stkbassn Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 I had the LTB Sweeper Spinnerbait rod. So far the best I've ever owned and I regret selling it. It's a fine rod for sure! I have the E6X Loomis now and love it as well. Awesome rod. I don't own an NRX or GLX rods. I want the Megabass spinnerbait rod next....it's on the list. 2 Quote
UKCATSBASSER Posted August 19, 2015 Author Posted August 19, 2015 I have a Loomis e6x cranking Rod, flipping stick and a spinning rod. Love them all. Debating on the e6x jig n worm series or something else. The more I think about it for what I do I should nix the glx/NRX route. Quote
Logan S Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 The LTBs are great. For what you described I would get the 7'1" MH/F. FWIW, I think the Legend Elite/Extreme is a more direct comparison to the GLX/NRX line ups though...Not that'd you'd be disappointed with the LTB's, I have several along with some Elites and I love them all. Any St Croix Legend series is well worth the price tag IMO. 2 Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted August 19, 2015 Super User Posted August 19, 2015 I will echo the above. If you are wanting GLX/NRX performance, you're better off in the Elite/Extreme series. The LTB is no slouch and the blank is fantastic but in my hands they are annoyingly tip heavy and the sk2 reel seat is ridiculously uncomfortable. Hold one before you buy if you can. Some like the reel seat and tip heaviness is relative to the person holding it. Quote

UKCATSBASSER Posted August 19, 2015 Author Posted August 19, 2015 I'm debating on the $250ish range or to step up to the nrx. I figured a LTB is not fair to compare to nrx etx Quote
Mike2841 Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 The nrx is nicer than a croix, but I don't think it's 300$ better. Quote
jyu87 Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 I have 2 LTBs - I am in the market for more. Construction wise - I've beaten it to hell and I am VERY impressed with how it has been holding up. I've had issues with other similar priced rods with the eyes of the rod coming off or starting to crack - not the LTBs. Quote
kschultz76 Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 LTBs are nice rods at their price point and you can't beat St Croix service. In an LTB for the 3/8 jig plus trailer you want the the MH/F in your preferred length, I'd go 7'1". I think some folks like the MH/XF for jigs as well though I've not used one. Some of the LTBs are tip heavy but overall lightweight. Also the current reel seats are a love it or hate kind of a thing. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted August 20, 2015 Super User Posted August 20, 2015 They used to be my favorite rods..........until they went with the Fuji SK reel seats. Quote
Jon G Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 I really like the LTBs. In fact I'm still debating if I want to replace all my Dobyns Champions with them. They are a little tip heavy but to me it really isn't that bad. 1 Quote
JeziHogg Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 Every rod I use is a LTB. I personally like the reel seats and as for the tip being in the "heavy" side, I find that I don't have to swing as hard to get a good hook set. Quote
offsidewing Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 I love my LTB spinning rod. I have the 6'8" MXF and love it for plastics less than 3/8 oz. The 6'10" MLXF is on the spouse approved acquisition list. I was really confused by the grip the first time I held it in my basement. On the water, The first time I really needed to toss a light bait into a specific spot I loved it. I've wrestled some pigs with the rod and never once did the grip feel awkward. I Don't find it to be distractingly tip heavy at all. Quote
Turkey sandwich Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 They're great rods. Anything with a SCIII or better blank will be sensitive. If you're going to compare price points, I really like the Avid/AvidX/LTB rods and they're really hard to beat for under $300. Now, if you're looking to compare against NRX/GLX/etc at the the high end price point, try the Elites and Extremes. Both are built on awesome technology, and a lot comes down to grip preference. DaveT63 Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 I understand St Croix is in the process of upgrading their Elite line. They usually place remaining stock on sale in their bargain room for 30-50% when they do that. If you are a bit patient, you should be able to get an Elite model for the price of an LTB, and that is much more comparable to the GLX line. 1 Quote

St Croix seems to use a shorter grip than others lending itself to the "tip heavy" feel. I like the extra "effective rod length" (from seat to tip) but if you want a special seat and grip, St Croix sells blanks that can be built up to suit. 2 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted August 22, 2015 Global Moderator Posted August 22, 2015 I have 7 or 8 LTBs from the older, full grip models to the current model. I really like them and must lot have sensitive enough hands to notice how tip heavy they're claimed to be. I use both the 7' 1" MH and the 7' 6" MH for jig fishing and like them both very well. 1 Quote

Poolshark Posted August 22, 2015 Posted August 22, 2015 For 3/8 ounce jigs I'd use the 71 mhf. I like st croix but feel like they are slightly tip heavy for my liking. The quality is top notch though and they are fair with their warranty. Quote
Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted August 23, 2015 Super User Posted August 23, 2015 you guys talk about St. Croix rods being tip heavy ? try a St.Croix 9' legend tournament musky !!! i don't sweat it as i use it for tip down presentations only ( swimbaits ) Quote
Silas Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 Grip too short for my hands. Sold it. Much prefer the Avid. Quote
