Weightless Worm Fishing Line?

I need a spinning setup specifically for weightless worms, wacky and t-rig mostly. What'd be the best weight line to buy for this setup? (I mostly use braid, but I'll take mono suggestions as well) Also, what'd be the best leader line weight? Also, while I'm at it, what reel would you suggest in the 50 dollar range?

man, just go with 10-15 lb braid with a 6-8 lb fluoro leader. Power pro to red label.

as for the reel, a Daiwa exceler can be had for something like $50. They're light and have a nice, smooth drag. I'd get a 2000 size on a 7' med light fast rod.

I use 40# Daiwa Samurai in Yellow. It is 8# mono equivalent diameter--same as most 30# superlines.

If I add a leader, it is 20# fluorocarbon of about 3'-4' in length. I use it for weight to overcome the floating tendency of superline.

 

I prefer the highest gear ratio spinning reels. I use Shimano 1000 and 2500 sizes depending on the rod length. There are several price ranges to choose from.

for what you described, i like 15lb power pro and 8lb flouro as a leader.  That's what i'm using for the same application and throwing that on my pflueger supreme mgx reel.  For about $50 i would say a pflueger president would be the ticket.

If you wish weightless and from the shore, I would go with a 10LB Fluoro or Copoly. Assuming this will be your fineese combo, you will need to have maintain contact with your lure in order to feel bites. Braid doesn't sink, which allows the wind to blow it, and decrease your contact with your plastic. I have braid on one of my spinning setups, and now I regret it, as I can't feel any of the subtle bites.

Well, it really depend on how light that "weightless" worm is don´t you think ?

 

A 5" "weightless" senko weights about 3/8 oz and you can cast it a mile away with 25 lb test nylon, on the other hand I don´t think you can cast a "weightless" tiny fluke more than 20 ft away with the same line.

Straight 8 lb Sniper. However if you're throwing 5" Senkos, casting gear and a bit heavier line is probably better.

 

Fishing weightless worms on braid is gross, especially if there's a breeze. Not saying it can't be done (I did it last night! It was awful!), but if you're making a dedicated combo, do it right, yo.

 

Probably wait for the new Sedona reel. I'm not a President fan. Terrible line twist.

Alright, thanks for the tips everybody. I think I'll maybe do 10LB copolymer, as braid seems not to be the way to go, which is fine by me. Jut means I'll be saving ten bucks in line! Plus I've never tried copolymer but have heard a lot of good stuff about it! As far as a reel goes, I'll probably avoid the president, as this isn't the first time I've heard about it creating line issues (my dad used to own one and got wind knots and birdnests all the time) Maybe I'll look into a Mitchell 300, I've loved those reels from just trying them out in-store. Either that or a Shimano probably. As far as a rod goes, I'm thinking a mojo bass, but I'm gonna play with that rod and some others a little more first.

15# smackdown is my line of choice for weightless applications. Suuuuuper thin and smooth. A little pricey but it's KILLER stuff. So thin I had to switch to epoxy-sealed eyes because the knots were getting caught in it and breaking under load.

Man I love that line. Worth every penny IMO.

i would imagine 10lb copoly to be pretty tough to manage on a spinning reel.  look into yozuri hybrid.  has a MUCH higher breaking strength than the pound rating.  You could do 6 or 8 lb yozuri hybrid if you want to go that route.

I've never heard of a pflueger president causing problems simply by it's design. Windknots and birdsnests are caused by line selection and user error when retrieving slack line or reeling against the drag. JMO of course.

6 lb Yo Zuri is solid on spinning reels. I'd still use fluoro, but options are good.

Any sub 50 dollar spinning reel isn't going to offer the best in terms of line management. It is what it is.

For the right line, I would consider how slow / fast you want that worm to sink, and make your decision based on that.

The new Daiwa Revros at $49.00 is going to be a hot reel - I have an Exceler and President which I love but after trying out a new Dawai Revros I believe the Revros beats anything in it's price point up through the $75 range .

As I post all the time here I use 7 or 8# Sniper FC on a Shimano Sahara or Symetre reel for drop shot, wacky, and weightless worm presentations. Drop shot is 7# and the other are 8#. I have 1 7# and 2 8# dedicated setups on ML and M rods. These work great for me. I will throw a weightless super fluke on BC 14# FC.

6lb yozuri hybrid has a breaking strength of 11+lbs & its soft with little to no memory.

6# Yozuri Hybrid clear is what I use for spinning gear starting this year. Hauled in a nice hawg on that line a couple weeks back. Check out my gallery for proof. I was using 8lb Invisx before YoZuri and don't regret the change. Pflueger President reel is tough to beat for $50-60. However, 5" Senko is as heavy a bait as I sling on spinning gear w/ that line.

I agree with the 10-20lb braid to 8lb fluoro leader for the weighless worm. 

 

As for the reel, if you want to stay under 50, Pfluegar Trion. If you can go just a little higher, a Pfluegar President.
